Lesson Study [Infographic]

Lesson Study [Infographic] | Linking Literacy, Research, and Practice | Scoop.it

According to Robinson (2009), “Taking part in collaborative enquiries into improving teaching and learning is the single most impactful action a school leader can take to improve educational outcomes for pupils.”

Lesson Study is one way of achieving this. It is a planned programme of teacher enquiry which originated in Japan. It enables teachers to work collaboratively in order to explore and improve their own practice.

However, it requires a strong commitment from staff and is time-consuming. As such, school leaders must be serious about setting time aside for teachers to meet, observe each other, and give feedback. This might involve getting cover for some lessons.

It has been almost two years since this article was published in The Age, celebrating the positives use of such a tool in a variety of educational contexts.

This made me think about not just how we as teachers feel about technology use in schools, but also, how do our students feel about it? We know many of them know more about how to use the technology than we do, so are we involving them in the decisions we make about use and purchase of technology...or are we doing what we've always done and assumed we know better than they do?

According to Facebook's news page, the service has 1.23 billion active users, a little over 20% of the population of the world. Twitter has around 200 million. These services, or something like them, have become increasingly important in our lives, influencing the news media and a variety of public decision making processes. Between a need for security and utility, we need to start learning, then teaching, then learning some more, how to best use social media, and classrooms are not the only place where this needs to be done.

A computing revolution in schools | Coding | Europe | UK | Linking Literacy, Research, and Practice | Scoop.it

This is the week when a revolution begins to sweep through schools in England. It involves a whole new way of teaching children about computing - but I suspect many parents, and even some teachers, know very little about this important moment in education.

As children from five upwards return to school, they are going to have to start learning how to program - or to "code" to use the trendy term which seems to upset some old-school programmers. This is the result of the new national curriculum for computing that is being introduced in England this term.
