Today’s students may be skilled at texting and social media, but many are unable to perform online research and distinguish accurate information on the web, according to a new study."

Wait, the results are "surprising, considering that the students are, after all, digital natives." ?? When are we going to retire this cliche? Being able to evaluate multiple sources of information or to research beyond Google are not innate skills. We fail students EVERY TIME we call them digital natives. It's lazy, and it annoys me. They also live surrounded by print, but we don't call them reading natives.

OK, climbing off the soapbox, because at the very end of this article, school librarians are mentioned as being potential leaders in instruction. At least we agree on something! This is what most of my colleagues and I do every day in the library. Digital literacy education should be embedded in every lesson we teach, as part of the critical thinking skills we know students need.

Library without books debuts at Florida’s newest college

Library without books debuts at Florida’s newest college | Digital information and public libraries | Scoop.it
By Letitia Stein TAMPA Fla. (Reuters) - The library opening with the first day of classes on Monday at Florida's newest college features a sunlit arched roof and cozy reading chairs - but not a single book. A fully digital library is among the futuristic features of Florida Polytechnic University's striking dome-shaped building, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. "It's a boldly relevant decision to go forward without books," said Kathryn Miller, the university's director of libraries. Rising along a drab stretch of highway between Tampa and Orlando, Florida Polytechnic envisions building a technology corridor in the image of Silicon Valley.

Facing declining visitors and uncertainty about what to do about it, library administrators in the new town of Almere in the Netherlands did something extraordinary. They redesigned their libraries based on the changing needs and desires of library users and, in 2010, opened the Nieuwe Bibliotheek (New Library), a thriving community hub that looks more like a bookstore than a library.

Design Thinking for Libraries

Design Thinking for Libraries | Digital information and public libraries | Scoop.it
Design Thinking for Libraries is an approach to improving your library through creativeproblem solving.

This toolkit guides you through Design Thinking so you can start coming up with solutions to everyday challenges within the library. Design thinking, or human-centered design, is all about starting with people — the users that visit your library. At IDEO, we’ve been using similar methods to envision new products, services, spaces, and experiences that bring them to life. We created this toolkit specifically for the library setting, and we’re looking forward to seeing how you might create impact by seeing your work through a fresh perspective: the design thinking lens!

Speaking Volumes - the impact of public libraries on wellbeing / Carnegie UK Trust

Speaking Volumes - the impact of public libraries on wellbeing / Carnegie UK Trust | Digital information and public libraries | Scoop.it

"The Carnegie UK Trust publication Speaking Volumes: the impact of public libraries on wellbeing shows the wide range of ways in which public libraries can affect the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Speaking Volumes demonstrates in a clear graphical way how libraries are relevant to four main policy areas: social, economic, cultural and education policy – all of which have an impact on wellbeing.

The leaflet is based on hundreds of examples of practice throughout the UK and Ireland, as well as published evidence of impact. Databases of some of these examples show how public libraries support learning, promote economic wellbeing, act as cultural centres and contribute to the creation of strong and healthy communities."

Libraries connect people with resources, facilitate inquiry and popular education, and are accessible and highly trusted. For the growing movement fighting for an alternative to a culture of surveillance, they are an excellent place to start."
