How to Use Graph Databases to Analyze Relationships, Risks and Business Opportunities

"Graph databases are one of the new technologies encouraging a rapid re-thinking of the analytics landscape. By tracking relationships - in a network of people, organizations, events and data - and applying reasoning (inference) to the data and connections, powerful new answers and insights are enabled.

This presentation will explain how graph databases work, and how graphs can be used for a number of important functions, including risk management, relationship analysis and the identification of new business opportunities. It will use a case study in the manufacturing sector to demonstrate how complex relationships can be discovered and integrated into analytical systems. For example, what are the repercussions for the supply chain of a major flood in China? Which products are affected by political unrest in Thailand? Has a sub-subcontractor started selling to our competition and what does that mean for us? What happened historically to the price of an important sub-component when the prices for crude oil or any other raw material went up?

Lots of answers can be provided by graph (network) analysis that cannot be answered any other way, so it is crucial that business and BI executives learn how to use this important new tool."

sehr fortschrittlich und wichtig!

luiy's curator insight, July 8, 2013 7:48 AM

The Humanities and Social Sciences are a vital component of human culture and offer an essential insight into the world in which we live. The Digital Humanities reflect the transition of the Humanities to the digital age. However, they do not only bring with them new technical means, but also new forms of knowledge creation and dissemination within, across and outside academic disciplines.

In the field of Digital Humanities, experimental practices, reflexivity and the collaborative elaboration of standards are deeply interconnected. They are, therefore, an occasion to rethink and extend the Humanities through new materials, methods and hermeneutics. Furthermore, they represent an opportunity to redefine our relationship to society through open access to cultural heritage and the development of collaborative projects which also engage non-academic audiences. Thus, we see them as pivotal in the future of the Humanities.

This is a great article from Kurt at Avalon explaining why Big Data and Semantics will have a beautiful future togetehr.

Tony Agresta's curator insight, July 1, 2013 10:25 AM

Adding context and meaning to unstructured text is essential.  When combined with internal data and external 3rd party data, this can be a very effective approach in intelligence analysis.   Clearly there are a host of applications for the combined approach of big data and semantics.    But I find investigations to be one of the most interesting.  Connecting the dots to reveal hidden connections across data sets is a powerful way to uncover networks of clandestine activity.

MAKING YOUR MEDICAL STUDENTS AND HUMAN RESSOURCES MORE MOTIVATED!

If they don't where they're going to, let's them know at least where they come from!

Let you teach your students the universal history of the hospital and the medical school like I'm proposing it from Hippocrates of Cos to now.

Our university hospitals originated from Nestorians and Syriaq bimaristans! If you're interested in and you don't know how to do it, let you be free to invite me as a visiting lecturer. I'll do that for the best of your students. You just have to pay my C-airplane ticket and a 3-night-stay in a good hotel. Since Gl. Patton's army delivered my village on 4 August 1944 from Rommel's one, I don't request honoraria. This is a gift to the US people.
Prof. Dr. JF Moreau, MD, of Paris, France, is Honorary Fellow of the American Collège of Radiology. I was Visiting Professor twice at UCSD, once at the Downstate Medical Center of Brooklyn NY, and at the Arizona Health Center, Tucson, AZ. I lectured many times in plentiful main universities in the whole USA and Canada from 1979. I speak English and Spanish fluently.
