IBM teams with Apple on artificial intelligence health program

IBM teams with Apple on artificial intelligence health program | digital healthcare 1 | Scoop.it

IBM on Monday announced alliances with Apple and others to put artificial intelligence to work drawing potentially life-saving insights from the booming amount of health data generated on personal devices.

IBM is collaborating with Apple, Medtronic, and Johnson & Johnson to use its Watson artificial intelligence system to give users insights and advice from personal health information gathered from fitness trackers, smartphones, implants or other devices.

The initiative is trying to take advantage of medical records increasingly being digitized, allowing quick access for patients and healthcare providers if the information can be stored and shared effectively. IBM wants to create a platform for that sharing.

"All this data can be overwhelming for providers and patients alike, but it also presents an unprecedented opportunity to transform the ways in which we manage our health," IBM senior vice president John Kelly said in a news release

I spoke with a colleague yesterday at the IBM Sellers University in Salou. He told me about a test his brother had done in Australia for Sleep Apnea - the test cost $6000 in Sydney 10 years ago............Now your GP will recommend an iPhone App that goes under your pillow and monitors your movement over night giving you the results in the moring...... costs about $3.99  - one small example of where this technology is taking us.

The Science behind viral stories on the Web

The Science behind viral stories on the Web | digital healthcare 1 | Scoop.it

"When Jonah Berger was a graduate student at Stanford, in the early aughts, he would make a habit of reading page A2 of the Wall Street Journal, which included a list of the five most-read and the five most-shared articles of the day. “I’d go down to the library and surreptitiously cut out that page,” he recalls. “I noticed that what was read and what was shared was often different, and I wondered why that would be.” What was it about a piece of content—an article, a picture, a video—that took it from simply interesting to interesting and shareable? What pushes someone not only to read a story but to pass it on?"

Une (petite) leçon à garder en tête pour la diffusion d'information

Jody MacPherson's curator insight, March 10, 2014 5:36 PM

I think this sums up social media quite nicely:

"The irony, of course, is that the more data we mine, and the closer we come to determining a precise calculus of sharing, the less likely it will be for what we know to remain true. "

Welcome to reality.

Create educational content:  Ask your physicians for the instructions they repeat throughout the day to patients and suggest they work on an instructional video or article on the subject that the hospital can post online.

Do the legwork: Make it easier on doctors by assigning marketing department staff to create accounts and upload physician bios and photos.

Share results with physicians: Reward doctors who share their expertise by showing them how their photos, videos or articles led to an increase in traffic to your hospital website or rise in clinic registrations.

Infographic: Big Data Analytics in Healthcare

Infographic: Big Data Analytics in Healthcare | digital healthcare 1 | Scoop.it
More than two thirds of healthcare decision makers say analytics is one of their organization’s top three priorities, according to CDW’ Healthcare’s Analytics in Healthcare Report. The report finds top motivational factors driving analytics are:

- the rising cost of healthcare (59%)

- Medicare/Medicaid EHR incentive programs (44%) and;

- accountable care (41%)

Organizations moving forward with analytics have taken critical steps to prepare, such as investing to improve data capture, storage and processing. Many plan to continue investing in those areas in 2015. The infographic illustrates how big data analytics in healthcare is undergoing big changes — namely integrating advanced data analytics for improved population health management.

A doctor's prescription for social media

A doctor's prescription for social media | digital healthcare 1 | Scoop.it

"As an experiment,  I immersed myself in social media for the past three months.  I started this blog, joined Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, bought a domain name, and posted on Facebook for the first time in years.

Even within this short period of time, I reaped tangible benefits: I interacted with top physicians from across the world, kept up with the  medical literature, participated in discussions with patients about how how rheumatic diseases affect their lives, joined webinars about improving the patient experience, and provided educational information to physicians and patients about autoinflammatory diseases, my clinical interest.

Social media has changed the way that I think about and practice medicine, and it’s only been a few months"
