The key problem with p2p lending is that there is not enough big players in the industry.

Only 2 major players exist with over 95% market share.

The U.S. P2P lending industry has shown exponential growth, with over $2.5 billion in loans originated to date. However, there remain only two major competitors in the space, so the timing seems right for CircleBack’s launch

Default Rates at Lending Club and Prosper

P2P Consultants's curator insight, July 26, 2013 6:45 PM

Author does a very good analysis of deault rates at the Lending Clug and Prosper

"Having a higher default rate has been the price Prosper has paid for offering substantially higher interest rates than Lending Club. HR-grade (high risk) loans at Prosper commonly have a 31% interest rate and a 20% default rate, while the riskiest Lending Club G-grade loans have a 25% interest rate with only a 10% default rate.

As a side note, these higher interest and default rates have allowed lenders like myself to earn a higher return at Prosper (see my 2013Q2 returns)"

Interesting facts;

A new consumer survey conducted by peer-to-peer lender Assetz Capital has revealed that over half (53%) of consumers do not know what peer-to-peer lending is, identifying it as “a loan to a friend or associate”.

Only 28% accurately identified peer-to-peer lending as a non-bank loan to a business or entrepreneur.

The key problem with p2p lending is education and awareness.

This survey is done in UK, but the numbers are the same for the US

The right look:

For investors, it is even more exciting! Traditionally, there are only three fixed income asset classes: Treasuries (lending to the Fed) which pay nothing (1-2%); Municipals (lending to states) which pay peanuts (2-3%) and Corporates (lending to corporations) which pay between 4% and 7% depending on credit quality.

Now that there is P2P lending (lending directly to individuals,) investors can earn between 6% to 15% in returns! I call this a new asset class. It is riskier than corporates, but like all risks, it can be managed, and the rewards are superb.
