Deborah Fillman's insight:

If my friends don't want to read what I post, I would almost rather they just unfriend. What I put out there is the real me, so I guess I figure if they don't like what I post, they don't really like *me.* Why be "friends" with someone whose thoughts and ideas you don't want to see in your feed? See less? OK, I guess, but not see at all? WHY?

A Message to Inbound & Content Marketing Execs From the Trenches: We Don't Care What We Call It

A Message to Inbound & Content Marketing Execs From the Trenches: We Don't Care What We Call It | Digital Experience Journal | Scoop.it
Someday in my career, I hope to work my way up to the top of my field,
whether as an executive, a founder, or a trusted leader with valuable
insights into the business world around me.

But I’m not there yet. So while I can’t suppose to know what goes through
the mind of a CMO or one of those Twitter-famous people, I can with
certainty speak to what it’s like to practice marketing in the trenches.
I’ve been there. I am there. And I’ve dug around in the mud of these
trenches to pull out a
Deborah Fillman's insight:

Love this so much. I "get" the urge to be precise (if that's indeed what it is, and it's not just another attempt to sound oh-so-much-smarter-and-hipper-than-thou), but does it really matter what we call it?

Isn't the most important thing that it's GOOD (that is, that people want to voluntarily consume it, share it--preferably after actually consuming it themselves, but hey, we'll take it...)?

Stop Thinking About What To Write About, Start Doing It: The Story of Dave Gorman

Stop Thinking About What To Write About, Start Doing It: The Story of Dave Gorman | Digital Experience Journal | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good
Deborah Fillman's insight:

Have you done anything interesting lately? Don't get hung up on what "interesting" means--remember, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld created an entire series around seeing the "interesting" and amusing in the mundane things we do everyday. Few of us have the freedom (or money) to travel the globe doing interestingly mundane things, but we DO things every day that are more interesting than we might think!

Robin Good's curator insight, February 16, 2:08 PM

Translate this idea to your specific reality, niche or industry and you have a great approach that integrates storytelling in its DNA and a fantastic way to always have interesting and attention-grabbing content for your readers.

The story of Dave Gorman, a British stand-up comedian, goes like this:

"...instead of trying to think of interesting things to write about for his act, he would do interesting things – and then write about those.

It turns out that people are far more interested in the weird or exciting things you’ve done that in the weird or exciting things you’ve just thought about."

A simple idea like this can truly transform the way you approach writing and the creation of content to build your own reputation and credibility online.

"In other words, doing interesting stuff makes you an interesting person to follow."

Thanks to Ian Brodie for this article of 2012, but as valuable to read now as it was then.

Inspiring. 8/10

Why Steve Jobs Didn't Listen to His Customers | LinkedIn

Why Steve Jobs Didn't Listen to His Customers | LinkedIn | Digital Experience Journal | Scoop.it
Deborah Fillman's insight:

WARNING to those who would overgeneralize Jobs' message to argue *against* user and audience research when it comes to MARKETING, or who think they can create user experiences that merely "present" what they want to say, the way they want to say it.

Innovating and inventing products and solutions, and marketing those products and solutions are two entirely different endeavors. If you are selling or marketing, I caution you--you ignore your audience at your own peril.

Even Steve Jobs (and Henry Ford) hired people to sell their products for them after they were invented, and last time I checked, "You don't know what you want or need" wasn't their pitch.
