Digital publishers grew significantly in 2013, adding new writers, raising capital and expanding into new countries. But what the digital natives like BuzzFeed and Mashable haven’t quite worked out yet is how to convert all that growth into sustainable long-term businesses: Digital publishers may have added roughly 5,000 full-time editorial jobs last year, but those additions hardly make up for the 45,000 total jobs lost by the newspaper and magazine industries.

The reach of newspaper digital content was highest among those ages 25-34 (85%). More than eight in 10 are also reached among those in the 35-44 and 45-54 age segments.

Pew’s 11th annual State of the News Media report, out this morning, offers fresh measures of news media revenue and news staffing at digital-only start-ups. Both findings are arresting for those of us in the news-about-news business but also shed light on the well-being of the industry as a whole.

Newsrooms in digital-only startups now provide roughly 5,000 jobs. That compares to about 15,000 lost in newspapers in recent years and additional cuts at news magazines.

Many consumer surveys point to an obvious conclusion: most people hate seeing ads on smartphones and tablets. But the truth is, contrary to the desire for an ad-free experience, when faced with the choice between free apps with ads, or paying even $.99 for apps without ads, consumers overwhelmingly choose the free apps and tolerate the ads.
