Noam Chomsky on Technology & Learning

Noam Chomsky on Technology & Learning | DIGITAL EDUCATION AND (FOREIGN) LANGUAGE LEARNING IN ITALY | Scoop.it

As far as technology itself and education is concerned, technology is basically neutral. It’s like a hammer. The hammer doesn’t care whether you use it to build a house or whether on torture, using it to crush somebody’s skull, the hammer can do either.

Mindful use of each tool is indispensable in our learning and education. Only in schools, do we worry about mandating and prescribing a particular tool.

Nevertheless, excellent teaching remains at the heart of student success. It is imperative that educators continue to explore and experiment with new technologies -- and share best practices -- to support positive learning outcomes and successfully propel students in 2020 and beyond.

Interesting article though most of what it describes is already possible. Also not much mention of augmented reality, which I think will become increasingly important.

Mauricio Martinez's curator insight, February 10, 2014 8:47 AM

Some teachers still think of technology as "the future of classrooms", however, these innovations are already playing an important role in education. As the article says, "It's not about technology; it's about sharing knowledge and information, communicating efficiently, building learning communities and creating a culture of professionalism in schools.".

What every school needs from a digital strategy

What every school needs from a digital strategy | DIGITAL EDUCATION AND (FOREIGN) LANGUAGE LEARNING IN ITALY | Scoop.it

The problem is compounded by the fact that many of the adults involved in education simply lack the experience and skills to be appropriate role models in the use of social media. This is why a greater, more concerted and more constructive involvement of schools in the digital lives of their students is necessary if we want our students to understand how to be good all-round citizens. Simply ignoring this other dimension of pupil behaviour seems to me to be grossly irresponsible.

How English language teachers can go with the Twitter flow

How English language teachers can go with the Twitter flow | DIGITAL EDUCATION AND (FOREIGN) LANGUAGE LEARNING IN ITALY | Scoop.it
The search for classroom content is easier with a tweet or two...

"[...] despite criticism that Twitter only amplifies the mundane, it is a very powerful sharing community where teachers can find a constant supply of articles, website links, lesson plans, interactive games, worksheets and a whole lot more.In fact, the steady flow of resources that can arrive via Twitter could make searching on Google redundant. The danger is that Twitter could become overwhelming and, like me, you might find yourself putting limits on your use (I survive on a strict limit of 30 minutes a day) [...]"

Top 10 Things Teachers Want From Their Digital Classrooms

Top 10 Things Teachers Want From Their Digital Classrooms | DIGITAL EDUCATION AND (FOREIGN) LANGUAGE LEARNING IN ITALY | Scoop.it
Yes…The digital classroom. Yes, it is here, even if you can’t see it. It’s in the minds of your students, even if you make them switch off their mobile phones. It’s a nagging presence in the back of your mind, even if you still insist on using a cassette player from the 1980s in your classroom. The world is changing even if you are in denial.
