Sesame Street Framework for School Readiness

description by EdSurge

"To catch up with peers who have low risk factors, a high-risk child would need to make nearly twice as much progress during a year in kindergarten. At least, that's the disheartening conclusion of Kindergartners' Skills at School Entry, a report from the Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street. The Sesame Workshop also shared an Educational Framework for School Readiness, which outlines preschoolers' development paths on 20 core school readiness skills, from memorizing the alphabet to curiosity to self-regulating their emotions."

Main findings

"The key finding of the study is that a common conceptual approach at European level, capable of supporting the development of digital capacity in educational organisations, is both desirable and attainable.

The DigCompOrg framework has seven key elements and fifteen sub-elements that are common to all education sectors. There is also scope for the addition of sectorspecific elements and sub-elements. For each of the elements and sub-elements of DigCompOrg, a number of descriptors were developed (74 in total). Diagrammatically, the elements, sub-elements and descriptors of DigCompOrg are presented as the sectors of a circle, with an emphasis on their inter-relatedness and inter-dependence."

Colleges offer microgrants to help low-income students pay bills that can derail them - The Hechinger Report

Colleges offer microgrants to help low-income students pay bills that can derail them - The Hechinger Report | digital divide information | Scoop.it

"The idea, being tried at a growing number of colleges and universities, is simple: For low-income students, many of them minorities or the first in their families to go to college, surprisingly small financial shortfalls are often all that stands between them and their goals, according to Tim Renick, vice president for enrollment management and student success at Georgia State. Microgrants ranging from several hundred dollars to $2,000 can get them to the finish line.

Without such help, said Stacey Moore, associate provost for student success and retention at the University of Akron, “there is no other way for them to continue.”

Looking beyond Fisher v. University of Texas

Looking beyond Fisher v. University of Texas | digital divide information | Scoop.it
As Reuters reports, plaintiff Abigail Fisher had argued that she was rejected in favor of "lesser-qualified" candidates of color in violation of her constitutional right to equal protection under the law. In his opinion, however, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that "it remains an enduring challenge to our nation's education system to reconcile the pursuit of diversity with the constitutional promise of equal treatment and dignity," adding that UT-Austin's attempts to boost racial diversity in race-neutral ways had been unsuccessful.

Race-based affirmative action programs are not the only admissions policies that have an impact on the racial composition of student bodies. Legacy admissions benefit more white families because, going just a few generations back, many colleges only accepted white students. Preferences for athletes, too, benefit more white students than any other race. And in both cases, these white students are disproportionately from higher income families.

Richard Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, cites foundation research that found colleges were able to get similar results as affirmative action by using non-race-based measures, including getting rid of legacy preferences, paying attention to class, and beefing up transfer pipelines. But there’s a catch.

“There is a way to get racial diversity without affirmative action,” Kahlenberg said at a recent education conference. “It just costs more money.”

Global Competency for an inclusive World - OECD report

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, June 23, 5:22 PM

Nicole Gévaudan's curator insight, June 26, 3:43 PM
"Four propositions are integral to the 2030 Framework:
- The evolution of the traditional disciplinary curriculum should be rapidly accelerated to create knowledge and understanding for the 21st century.
- The skills, attitudes and values that shape human behaviour should be rethought, to counter the discriminatory behaviours picked up at school and in the family.
-An essential element of modern learning is the ability to reflect on the way one learns best
- Each learner should strive to achieve a small set of key competences, such as the competence to act autonomously. A competence is the ability to mobilise knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, alongside a reflective approach to the processes of learning, in order to engage with and act in the world. Global competence is being constructed on exactly this model."
