Why educating the educators is complex

Why educating the educators is complex | digital divide information | Scoop.it
Teaching is both craft and profession -- and more.

Thus teaching is a deeply social and emotional activity. You have to know your students and be able to read them quickly, and from that reading make decisions to slow down or speed up, stay with a point or return to it later, connect one student’s comment to another’s.

Simultaneously, you are assessing on the fly Susie’s silence, Pedro’s slump, Janelle’s uncharacteristic aggressiveness. Students are, to varying degrees, also learning from each other, learning all kinds of things, from how to carry oneself to how to multiply mixed numbers.

How teachers draw on this dynamic interaction varies depending on their personal style, the way they organize their rooms, and so on—but it is an ever-present part of the work they do.

Почему обучение педагогов является сложным?

DPG plc's curator insight, December 10, 2013 7:00 AM

In our expereince those who educate others and facilitate learning are great at using different tools however they must be taken on a journey that creates both confidence in using the tools and answers the WIIFM. The demands and needs of our students are changing and we need to ensure we keep up with these demands and in fact be early adopters and not laggards when it comes to change.

“The Monuments Must Go”: An Open Letter From the Great-Great-Grandsons of Stonewall Jackson

“The Monuments Must Go”: An Open Letter From the Great-Great-Grandsons of Stonewall Jackson | digital divide information | Scoop.it

"Dear Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and members of the Monument Avenue Commission,

We are native Richmonders and also the great-great-grandsons of Stonewall Jackson. As two of the closest living relatives to Stonewall, we are writing today to ask for the removal of his statue, as well as the removal of all Confederate statues from Monument Avenue. They are overt symbols of racism and white supremacy, and the time is long overdue for them to depart from public display. Overnight, Baltimore has seen fit to take this action. Richmond should, too.

“We are ashamed to benefit from white supremacy while our black family and friends suffer. We are ashamed of the monument.”

When people hear that I am a social studies teacher, their responses typically fall into two camps: they either tell me how much they love history or hate it. Devastating Toll of Hunger on US School Children | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization

Devastating Toll of Hunger on US School Children | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization | digital divide information | Scoop.it
Hunger is a growing problem for US children and increasingly affects their performance in school, making it more difficult for them to focus on their classes or do homework. It also contributes to behavior and discipline problems.

This was the finding of a report issued last week by the anti-hunger charity Share Our Strength, based on a survey of 500 low-income parents and their teenage children in public schools. Some 325 teachers were also interviewed. “Low-income” was defined as at or below 185 percent of the official poverty line, or $45,417 a year for a family of four.

Among children in low-income families, 59 percent said they had gone to school hungry. In the richest country in the world, with the largest concentration of billionaires, one in six children faces hunger, some 13 million in all.

Hip Hop, Grit, & Academic Success: Dr. Bettina Love at TEDxUGA

"This impassioned talk explains how students who identify with Hip Hop culture have been ignored or deemed deficient in schools because of mainstream misconceptions associated with Hip Hop culture. Through Hip Hop, these students embody the characteristics of grit, social and emotional intelligence, and the act improvisation- all of which are proven to be predictors for academic success. So where is the break down between formalized education and the potential for success for these students? Dr. Love argues that ignoring students' culture in the classroom is all but an oversight; it's discrimination and injustice that plays out in our culture in very dangerous ways."...
