Something Very Big Is Coming: Our Most Important Technology Project Yet—Stephen Wolfram Blog

Something Very Big Is Coming: Our Most Important Technology Project Yet—Stephen Wolfram Blog | digital divide information | Scoop.it

Computational knowledge. Symbolic programming. Algorithm automation. Dynamic interactivity. Natural language. Computable documents. The cloud. Connected devices. Symbolic ontology. Algorithm discovery. These are all things we’ve been energetically working on—mostly for years—in the context of Wolfram|Alpha, Mathematica, CDF and so on.

But recently something amazing has happened. We’ve figured out how to take all these threads, and all the technology we’ve built, to create something at a whole different level.

Breaking News: @NAACP calls for national moratorium on charters

Breaking News: @NAACP calls for national moratorium on charters | digital divide information | Scoop.it
I don't believe that this has been reported anywhere else. Last week at the NAACP National Convention in Cincinnati, the delegates voted in a new resolution on charter schools. It's approval as policy will not be official until the National Board meeting in the Fall of 2016. However, this is a big news story that (I suspect…

Being a Young Black Male Teacher — The Synapse — Medium

Being a Young Black Male Teacher — The Synapse — Medium | digital divide information | Scoop.it
It’s hard enough being a new teacher. You have to learn the craft, learn the kids, and learn how to juggle both while still following the curriculum and doing your job well. Kudos to every young black male teacher out there. You already know most of them didn’t give us a chance as students, so what are the stats on them treating us equally as peers? Shoot, maybe I am the hammer and all these experiences are just me nailing nails down for no reason. Maybe every last teacher had a comment about the shoes I was wearing to work just because they thought they looked that good. Maybe they initially thought I was the gym teacher because of my physique. Nevertheless, that is what it is like to be a young black male teacher.

A Growth Mindset Could Buffer Kids From Negative Academic Effects of Poverty

A Growth Mindset Could Buffer Kids From Negative Academic Effects of Poverty | digital divide information | Scoop.it
Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, along with other education researchers interested in growth mindset, have done numerous studies showing that when students believe their intelligence can grow and change with effort, they perform better on academic tests. These findings have sparked interest and debate about how to encourage a growth mindset in students both at home and at school.

Stealing Hope – krissy venosdale | digital divide information | Scoop.it

"Whenever I see stories in the media, of people coming down on public education, it’s crushing.  My heart is filled with stories of real kids with real lives that I taught many years ago. I think about poverty and what life outside of our school was like for my students. I was fresh out of college and ill-equipped to understand fully what the situation was. But, I learned fast.  I knew I had 3 packs of copy paper and curriculum materials that were “on their way” from central office for almost the entire school year.   I learned quickly to make do with what I had.  Not because I was innovative, but because I had absolutely no other choice...
