Seth Dixon's curator insight, September 6, 1:13 PM

The Indian government doesn't want to seem threatened by the fact that China is paying for better transportation infrastructure that is essentially in their backyard.  India's neighbors are excited for the potential economic growth that this can bring, but weary of China's added clout and power throughout Asia.  As Parag Khanna argues is his new book Connectography, infrastructure and economic linkages will become increasingly more important to geopolitics and global economics; within that lens, China is certainly making a power move here.

Here is another example of cultural commodification and cultural appropriation.  As stated in the article, there is nothing illegal in this, but most companies stay away because the negative publicity for being sleazy is a enough of a cultural and economic deterrent to conform to the more accepted norms of society.

When the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture was established in 2003, it had no collection. Since then, museum leaders have acquired approximately 40,000 objects, of which some 3,500 will be on view. They document the tragedy and triumph of the African American experience, from the Colonial era of slavery to the election of the nation’s first African American president. Here are 36 of the most emotionally and historically resonant treasures in the collection that no visitor should miss.

FEATURING JEFF CHANG – The US Presidential election this year has inspired severe levels of anxiety, particularly among people of color who have borne the brunt of violent rhetoric from Donald Trump and his cohorts. If we believe the racist and xenophobic rhetoric, we deserve to be banned from entering the country, or pushed behind a wall, or imprisoned, or priced out of our homes. And if we are poor we deserve to remain poor. It is a difficult moment indeed.
