Protecting your child's digital identity | Digital CitizenShip | eSkills | digital divide information | Scoop.it
Child identity theft is considered to be one of the fastest-growing crimes. Kids’ identities are stolen over 50 times more than those of adults! We’re often so focused protecting our kids from so many threats in the real world; we forget that in cyberspace bad guys are stealing children’s identities to open credit cards, apply for loans, rent homes and even receive health care. Bad guys make money by selling and reselling the same child’s identity over and over. And they get away with it because parents don’t think about monitoring their son or daughter’s identity.

Why is this important? Children could potentially lose out on future jobs, internships and loans that require a clean background check or credit report—all because they were victims of identity theft as kids. That’s a future I’m trying to help my daughters avoid. Growing up in the real world is difficult enough that I don’t want their digital lives to hold them back.

An important read for everyone who has kids - in the classroom or at home!

Steven Stich's curator insight, December 9, 8:40 PM

Did you know that children's identity is stolen over 50 times more than adults? I had no idea until reading this article. People who steal children's identity use their information to open credit cards, apply for loans, and this can affect kids ability to gain jobs in the future as a result. One day these children will be the future of America so it is vital that actions are taken by parents to ensure that their children are being safe online, and that no one is taking advantage of them.

Coding Education Programs Expand In U.S. As IT Jobs Market Flourishes | digital divide information | Scoop.it
Across the country, programming training courses and education providers are looking to create closer ties to build better training modules for would-be coders and software developers. Earlier in November, Codecademy launched ReSkillUSA along with Thinkful, to reach out to the same community of under-employed workers. With the tagline “Make the skills gap end with you,” ReSkillUSA falls in line with the LaunchCode mission, if not its exact methods.

Still, both are no-cost or low-cost options for getting an education in programming, and taken together with a new credentialing program that General Assembly has launched in concert with a number of large technology and industrial companies, the new initiatives could be promising for future employment. Especially since the General Assembly credentialing tests are open to anyone.

The Future of the Internet of Things [infographic]

The Future of the Internet of Things [infographic] | digital divide information | Scoop.it

Ever wonder why Google is installing extreamly fast gigabit internet infrastructure when the average person needs 200x less speed? It is because of the future of the Internet of Things. In less than 10 years, the internet will not just be for your phone or laptop, everything will be online.

I’m talking about your car, fridge, tv, blender, air conditioner, front door, and even your wallet. This inevitable future is why google is starting today with affordable gigabit internet. This new wave of device overload will open up revenue and advertising streams to a whole new level.

Today’s infographic states that in 2020, every human being on earth will be connected to 10 separate devices.

I know I’m already using five and I bet one of the most prominent technology coming up soon will be wearable tech. If its for exercising, sports, general information or just making phone calls, wearable tech will be an exciting addition today’s digital arsenal.

Why educating the educators is complex

Why educating the educators is complex | digital divide information | Scoop.it
Teaching is both craft and profession -- and more.

Thus teaching is a deeply social and emotional activity. You have to know your students and be able to read them quickly, and from that reading make decisions to slow down or speed up, stay with a point or return to it later, connect one student’s comment to another’s.

Simultaneously, you are assessing on the fly Susie’s silence, Pedro’s slump, Janelle’s uncharacteristic aggressiveness. Students are, to varying degrees, also learning from each other, learning all kinds of things, from how to carry oneself to how to multiply mixed numbers.

How teachers draw on this dynamic interaction varies depending on their personal style, the way they organize their rooms, and so on—but it is an ever-present part of the work they do.

Why girls’ education can help eradicate poverty

Why girls’ education can help eradicate poverty | digital divide information | Scoop.it
Education is linked to the age at which women marry and have children. In sub-Saharan Africa and in South and West Asia, child marriage affects one in eight girls; one in seven gives birth by the age of 17.

Providing girls with a quality education also equips them with the confidence to confront people in power and challenge the inequalities that still exist for girls and women worldwide. Consider Mariam Khalique, a teacher in Pakistan who has used education to build her female students’ confidence and to encourage them to stand up for their rights.

One of her pupils was the young education activist Malala Yousafzai, whose global advocacy work is proof of the transformative power of quality schooling.

Rethinking Education: Self-Directed Learning Fits the Digital Age

Rethinking Education: Self-Directed Learning Fits the Digital Age | digital divide information | Scoop.it

Is the one-size-fits-all, top-down classroom a misfit for the Digital Age?

Standards-based education is ruining the way educators teach and children learn. Education should not be about teaching to the next level in education and vocation and yet, that is exactly what our current school system is designed to do.

Our goal should be to foster a love of learning for learning sake. Learning is not something that we should force onto our children to ensure they go to college and get a good job. True learning is intrinsically motivated and the reward is knowledge.

I also think there is no limit to using technology in the classroom. I think every student learns differently and integrating technology in the classroom can help students find new means of studying that works well for them. I agree that teaching students to test them all the the same level is not the way to go about it. I think that it is "destroying our youth" and causing them to be high anxiety.
