The Difference Between Makers and Manufacturers

The Difference Between Makers and Manufacturers | Digital Design and Manufacturing | Scoop.it

"Fans of 3-D printers and digital design tools argue that these technologies will transform the way we make goods. But can the “maker” movement really produce more than iPhone covers and jewelry?"

Hybrid Additive/Subtractive Fabrication Devices and Manufacturing Future

"Additive technologies (also called 3D printing) and their many uses and applications have risen exponentially over the last few years in terms of consciousness and adoption by industry. More traditional subtractive technologies have also been on the upswing with improvements in controllers, algorithms, motion control and software. As these two technology bases have improved so too have peripheral devices such as 3D scanners, robots and metrology systems. For manufacturers this is all good, but more often than not the additive/subtractive techniques are viewed as mutually exclusive. However, recently a new breed of manufacturing technology has begun to evolve — the hybrid, all-purpose fabrication machine."

Improving the world through engineering

Improving the world through engineering | Digital Design and Manufacturing | Scoop.it

"Dan Johns, a world expert in additive manufacturing, currently working on the Bloodhound SSC project, is featured in the book. He says: “Additive manufacturing offers true freedom of design to alter the mechanical behaviour of things and design them from the inside out. Design and manufacture will truly emulate nature, where nothing is straight or square, material is only placed where it is needed and systems are smart and fully integrated. In this renaissance, engineers will be artists and visionaries to match the genius of Leonardo da Vinci."

High-tech spider for hazardous missions

High-tech spider for hazardous missions | Digital Design and Manufacturing | Scoop.it
Spiders are very agile, and some can even jump. They owe this capability to their hydraulically operated limbs. Researchers have now designed a mobile robot modeled on the same principle that moves spider legs. Created using a 3-D printing process, this lightweight can explore terrain that is beyond human reach.

The Future of Manufacturing

The Future of Manufacturing | Digital Design and Manufacturing | Scoop.it
According to engineers with GE Aviation, the challenges of additive metal manufacturing—serious as they are—are small compared to the promise that this technology holds. How else can you make a plane engine 1,000 pounds lighter?
