I was introduced to Pinterest by one of my students about six months before the boom that made Pinterest a household word.

I wish I'd seized the opportunity and jumped right in. However, at first I just didn't get it.  Now in hindsight I realize that Pinterest is a curation platform-- one that appeals to millions.  Needless to say I'm now curating a dozen different interests!

Do you have a Food-related business?  Was interested to see that 57% of Pinners interact with food-related pins.  It's their top category.

It's a good question! The fact is that blogs are filled with articles about Pinterest. For my part, I am absolutely convinced that this kind of social media will wreak havoc among users... and you? [note mg]


It's addictive, fun, visually appealing, and easy, so it's no wonder Pinterest, the popular visual bookmarking site, has hooked millions of users. That said, the site’s growth (below) was fairly flat from its launch in early 2010 until September 2011. But since then, it’s simply been going gangbusters, begging the question--why now? Here are three reasons why we think it’s become so attractive.


1. Pinterest rides (and defines) a new trend: social relevance.


Pinterest is successfully riding a new trend wave in the social space, moving mechanisms for content sharing beyond connections (friends) and towards relevance, effectively broadening the social horizon for us content addicts.

"The latest Pinterest referral traffic data reveals that Pinterest drives more referral traffic than YouTube, LinkedIn and Google+ combined".


That is pretty significant for a social network that most marketers still do not even know exists. And yes, they are still an invite only community.


This data does not include EVERY referral source out there on the web. But it does put Pinterest into context compared to other major social sites. And it can give anyone doing business online a good sense of where strong referral opportunities might exist for their business.

Joyce any comment on the copyright implications of Pinterest? My understanding is that they can allow a user to be sued for use of an image and they specifically take nil responsibility for the use of images on their website...
