What is Curation?

This is the first in a series of videos explaining the shifts we're seeing in the world of content creation. Curation has exploded with the growth of Twitter, Tumblr and now Pinterest.

Why We're All Suddenly Obsessed With Pinterest

It's a good question! The fact is that blogs are filled with articles about Pinterest. For my part, I am absolutely convinced that this kind of social media will wreak havoc among users... and you? [note mg]

It's addictive, fun, visually appealing, and easy, so it's no wonder Pinterest, the popular visual bookmarking site, has hooked millions of users. That said, the site’s growth (below) was fairly flat from its launch in early 2010 until September 2011. But since then, it’s simply been going gangbusters, begging the question--why now? Here are three reasons why we think it’s become so attractive.

1. Pinterest rides (and defines) a new trend: social relevance.

Pinterest is successfully riding a new trend wave in the social space, moving mechanisms for content sharing beyond connections (friends) and towards relevance, effectively broadening the social horizon for us content addicts.

Success in a Connected World | Ross Dawson: Futurist, Inspirational Keynote Speaker, Strategy Advisor

<- This infographic seems a little simplistic. I don't really agree with the tools lined up. i think some tools are used in various areas and processes.  I also don't think that curation is only about visibility, it equally sits in execution and in relationships. It  is too simplistic, but I do think that being a curator will be essential to being successful in a connected world. So worth saving anyway. (JS)

40 Social Media Curation Sites and Tools

What is social media curation? Today, with the exponential growth of social networks and blogs, it can be overwhelming searching for information on the internet. As a result, the act of filtering, selecting, reviewing and providing commentary with a perspective on an article, or collection of articles, have become increasingly important. This is known as social media curation.

The Ability To Extract and Communicate Insight from Data It's Going To Be Huge: McKinsey Quarterly [Video]

Robin Good: In January of 2009 the McKinsey Quarterly published a video interview and a full article entitled "Hal Varian on how the Web challenges managers" in which Google’s chief economist told executives in wired organizations how much they needed a sharper understanding of how technology empowers innovation.

In the video, Hal Varian says something that if you are trying to understand the emerging curation trend, is as relevant (if not more) today as three years ago when it was first published:

"The ability to take data - to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it's going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades, not only at the professional level but even at the educational level for elementary school kids, for high school kids, for college kids.

Because now we really do have essentially free and ubiquitous data.

So the complimentary scarce factor is the ability to understand that data and extract value from it.

I think statisticians are part of it, but it's just a part.

You also want to be able to visualize the data, communicate the data, and utilize it effectively.

But I do think those skills - of being able to access, understand, and communicate the insights you get from data analysis - are going to be extremely important..."

<- and so what does this mean for education? For educators? For managers? For learners? Can curation skills help them? What do these curation skills consist of? (JS)

New Data: Pinterest Referring More Traffic Than LinkedIn, Reddit, Google+

This piece was written by Jason Heath for Socialfresh

"The latest Pinterest referral traffic data reveals that Pinterest drives more referral traffic than YouTube, LinkedIn and Google+ combined".

That is pretty significant for a social network that most marketers still do not even know exists. And yes, they are still an invite only community.

This data does not include EVERY referral source out there on the web. But it does put Pinterest into context compared to other major social sites. And it can give anyone doing business online a good sense of where strong referral opportunities might exist for their business.

The Highlights of the Data

Here are a few key takeaways from the Shareaholic findings:

Curation Is The New Creation - the local good

Most people have neither the time nor the stamina to wade through miles of information looking for the narrow range of content they're interested in. By sifting through fields of haystacks in search of a couple of needles, curators provide a valuable and powerful service. But don't confuse curation with aggregation.

Content Curation: Classroom Applications

here are available a variety of free tools in various formats that let you easily tag/save sites, articles, images, videos, presentations, etc. into a collection that you can share and have conversations about with other users. I’ve been spending some time at Pinterest, which is filled with inspiring images of recipes, crafts, clothes, housewares, quotes, etc. It’s like scrolling through an interactive magazine, where you can easily “pin” things you see/like that have been pinned by others, leave comments on other’s pins, as well as add new content to your own collections. Some similar sites include: Snip.it, Clipboard, Themeefy.com, bagtheweb and Scoop.it!

Social media has amplified two basic human needs so much that they have been transformed into entirely new behaviors. Sites have encouraged and rewarded us to spout, to talk about what we're up to and what we care about.

YouTube And Shiva Rajaraman Bring Intelligent Channel Picks To Online Video | Fast Company

"It depends what you're into. When there's stuff that's not easy to bake into the video itself, I would like much more of an intro around that stuff. Rebecca Black is a good example of this. It's a really bad music video, but what's better than that is the story. I need someone to tell that story, and no machine can do that as effectively as a person today. That's where human curators come in."

<- noticed that YouTube had changed their interface to allow users to become video curators. There's a whole blog post in this... (JS)

Content Curation for Twitter: How To Be a "Thought Leader DJ"

On Twitter, you are mixing content, content that the audience you hope to engage will find--not only interesting--but, irresistible, irresistible enough to comment on, @reply, retweet, share, like, etc. Ultimately, you hope your followers will enlist their followers to follow you because of your great content. Some call it a tribe, but think of it as your own club, a club where you are the DJ and people come to have a good time. As a Content Curator, you should be entertaining. Those who follow you should have access to the best content already disseminated for them. You get to exchange ideas about this great content, learn something new, maybe even change your opinion. Ultimately, when your friends or followers share your curated content with their friends, THEY look smart and cool.
