Outside Yosemite, citizens following the radio reports of deployed emergency personnel are picking up bits and pieces and amplifying and broadcasting rumors through Twitter and Facebook. Officials credit Google with directing people to reliable information on the inter-agency emergency site Inciweb. California's largest every forest fires have on scene 3,700 firefighting and support personnel, 15 helicopters and two DC-10 jets.

It seems as though companies have become obsessed with measuring every bit of data they collect on social media. From follower number fluctuations to mentions, they try to put a dollar sign on everything.

 

However, as Jonathan Payne contends, when you just focus on the numbers and not the reason(s) behind those numbers, you end up wasting precious time and energy.

 

"If you insist on devoting a half hour to pulling the numbers, devote another hour to investigate what the numbers actually mean."
