Haves and have nots in the sharing economy

Haves and have nots in the sharing economy | Digital Collaborative Consumption | Scoop.it
The sharing economy is almost universally portrayed as a good thing. A move toward a less materialistic culture and a way of living a “smaller,” more sustainable lifestyle. Who could argue with max...

It’s important to remember that despite all the talk about ownership being a thing of the past, at the end of the day somebody still owns all of this stuff, and often, that somebody is just another company. How To Design For The Sharing Economy

How To Design For The Sharing Economy | Digital Collaborative Consumption | Scoop.it
The definition of ownership is changing. We are becoming less interested in owning products and accumulating wealth through long-term purchases.
Camilla Colombo Serri's insight:

Design for collaborative consumptio:

- identify what can be shared

- allow customization, so that subsequent owners can make the product feel like their own and remove the traces of previous ownership

- When products change hands often, wear-and-tear is a big issue. What are the materials that will make products look new longer? What are the techniques for easy refresh, so that a product is more appealing to new users?

- collaborative consumption also stimulates concurrent usage among different users, such as when multiple users interact with a multitouch surface or similar interfaces. These interactions can also be parallel multitasking, in which multiple users interact with the same device doing different tasks.

- Collaborative consumption creates a new system of credit, for both online and in-person sharing. Online interactions are particularly prone to questions about trust: How can you trust a vendor who isn’t completely traceable.

Scarcity, Abundance, Excess: Towards a Social Theory of Too Much - Video and audio - News and media - Home | Digital Collaborative Consumption | Scoop.it
Camilla Colombo Serri's insight:

This lecture argues that since excess and overabundance are central phenomena of modern life, we should refound social theory on the concept of "too much of" rather than "too little of." I trace the origin of the scarcity theories that dominate our reasoning, and sketch the outlines of a social theory based on excess.

Forget City Hall, the insurance industry is what could really help the sharing economy

Forget City Hall, the insurance industry is what could really help the sharing economy | Digital Collaborative Consumption | Scoop.it
Understanding risk has been my life’s work. Over the past 36 years, I have spent time in all varieties of insurance: reinsurance, personal and commercial lines, accident, health, and more.  I’ve se...
Camilla Colombo Serri's insight:

Thus the insurers believe that these new exposures or risks are not covered by conventional homeowners, boat, tenant, and personal automobile policies, as they were not constructed to be utilized other than by the policyholder and their immediate family.

Risk avoidance – Help us help you. The most obvious way to avoid a loss is to limit the chances of a risk being realized. Depending on the nature of the market, risk mitigation processes like background checks, education materials, and active feedback loops increase the integrity of the user base, and improve insurance pricing.

Risk retention – Some risks may be palatable. If analysis shows that the downside is predictable and affordable, it may make sense to hold onto the risk. In these cases, self-insurance or “customer guarantees” are most appropriate.

Risk transfer – When realization of a risk could be too catastrophic for a market to handle, that is when it makes most sense to move risks onto others, typically through contracts or insurance policies.

We are in the early stages of collaborative market insurance, and the law of large numbers does not yet apply. You are wise to implement all three of the above strategies. Each startup is fighting on its own to educate carriers about usage. As the ecosystems grow, every underwriting strategy directed at it will move towards being commoditized, as has happened with traditional auto insurance.
