Starting Your Day on the Internet Is Damaging Your Brain by Srinivas Rao

Starting Your Day on the Internet Is Damaging Your Brain by Srinivas Rao | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it
I’ve said before the first 3 hours of your day can dictate how your life turns out. And this often begins with the very first thing that you decide to put in your brain. You can either start you day with junk food for the brain (the internet, distracting apps, etc) or you can start the day with healthy food for the brain (reading, meditation, journaling, exercising, etc). When you start the day with junk food for the brain, you put yourself at a self imposed handicap that inhibits your ability to get into flow and prevents you from doing deep work. When you start the day with health food for your brain, the exact opposite happens.

"Anytime I start my day with junk food for the brain, the quality of the day goes down. I’m less happy, focused, and productive. I spend a ton of time on the internet and don’t get any real work done. But if I start my day with health food for the brain, I find that my mood is better, I’m happier, more focused and productive."

The Textbook Is Dying. Meet the Artificially Intelligent Software That’s Replacing It.  | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it
This fall Pearson introduced an “immersive digital learning tool” called Revel that reimagines the textbook as a multimedia experience replete with videos, interactive exercises, and animated infographics. The goal, Pearson’s Stephen Frail tells me, is to make the course materials “more compelling than Facebook,” which after all is only “one click away” whenever a student is doing coursework on her computer or tablet.

How Technologies Will Shape Business in the Future

Innovation is transforming the personal technology space, and many companies now have digital initiatives linked with employee performance and behavior. It's clear such technologies will play an important role in driving digital business over the next few years, so technology leaders must start paying attention now, said Annette Jump, research director for Gartner Research. Gartner's "Top 10 Personal Technologies to Support Digital Business" report predicts that project outcomes will be most affected by virtual personal assistants (VPAs), machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Other technologies that will come into play include wearables, 3D printing, location sensing and tracking, and chatbots—all of will enable optimization of multiple business functions and transformational change in operations. VPAs, biometrics authentication, wireless power, 3D cameras and location sensing will allow organizations to improve usability, security and user experience for employees and customers. Gartner recommends that IT managers identify projects and scenarios for immersive experiences around training, simulations, modeling, telepresence, and product and brand marketing. It also suggests that companies embed 3D cameras into smartphones, tablets and PCs, as well as smart TVs and monitors. That will enable new usage models around gesture and facial recognition for biometric authentication and for measuring objects. Finally, integrating AI to analyze customer data, location and context can improve targeted marketing and customer experience management

Fascinating and scary series from "The Telegraph". Once AI develops sentience and can operate independently of human programming, we are in trouble. Refer to Isaac Asimov's classic sci-fi thriller "I, Robot".

Exploring the Ethical and Social Implications of AI

Exploring the Ethical and Social Implications of AI | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it
“People attribute mental states, desires and beliefs to things that don’t have them," said Vallor, which opens the door to vulnerability, manipulations and deceit.

AI is inherently hungry for data, so it wants to keep you engaged, according to Vallor. This can create problems, like people becoming more engaged with AI than with other humans.

Imagine an artificial agent following you around saying, "I am lonely. I'm bored. Could you talk to me about movies you like?" The end result, in some situations, could yield time taken away from spouses, children and friends. And, of course, greater amounts of data for marketers who want to manipulate you to get your money.

"We need to think about the way we interact with these systems. We, without thinking, develop emotional and morally-laden relationships with artifacts. This will take-off very quickly and have consequences we didn't expect," said Vallor.

AI Mirrors Our Biases
The panel also noted these interfaces and systems weren't being designed, developed or trained by a diverse group of experts. Meaning sentiment and content analysis could potentially be non-existent for minority groups, including the elderly. Robert Shiller, the Nobel-winning author who predicted the two biggest speculative markets in recent history, is repeating that bitcoin is in a bubble. The cryptocurrency is "the best example right now," Shiller told Quartz's John Detrixhe in an interview published Tuesday. In January 2014 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he called the cryptocurrency "an amazing example of a bubble," adding that there was "no question about it."  Bitcoin has exploded in price and popularity since then. Bitcoin was at $4,337 on Tuesday, or about 442% over its price in January 2014 of about $800 a coin.

Why Education is the hardest sector of the economy to automate

Why Education is the hardest sector of the economy to automate  | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it

We’ve all heard the warning cries: automation will disrupt entire industries and put millions of people out of jobs. In fact, up to 45 percent of existing jobs can be automated using current technology.

However, this may not necessarily apply to the education sector. After a detailed analysis of more than 2,000-plus work activities for more than 800 occupations, a report by McKinsey & Co states that of all the sectors examined, “…the technical feasibility of automation is lowest in education.”

There is no doubt that technological trends will have a powerful impact on global education, both by improving the overall learning experience and by increasing global access to education. Massive open online courses (MOOCs), chatbot tutors, and AI-powered lesson plans are just a few examples of the digital transformation in global education. But will robots and artificial intelligence ever fully replace teachers?
