Teenagers spend a significant ammount of time online and digital devices.  From experience teaching it's been an interesting experiecne watching the students react differently to print material compared to the same material provided online.  Embedding digital media within pedagogical practices is not only beenficial but also essential in today's educational environment.

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: When Students Ask “Can I Friend You?”: An Ethical Response Guide.

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: When Students Ask “Can I Friend You?”: An Ethical Response Guide. | digital citizenship | Scoop.it
I was excited to check out this Tweet from @TaliCSM the ed director at Common Sense Education about how to ethically respond to a student friend-request. It took me to educator Keegan Korf’s blog post where in short, she shared that she only “friends” former students, and warns them that inappropriate behavior will result in defriending.

Keegan’s simple and sensible policy mirror’s the practice of many educators I work with, know, and respect.

I replied to her Tweet explaining I had a different view.

I don’t like blanket policies and I don’t believe the only relationship to have with young people is teacher-student. I learn so much from students.

What I loved was Keegan’s excitement around the conversation and willingness to gain another perspective. This is how we develop and grow our thinking.

Use this article to reflect on how you would act in this very real scenario. You may or may not agree but it would be prudent to have guidelines in place. It will only take one student to ask and that probably will happen. Check your school or district policies first.

Researchers find more than 100 Tor nodes that are snooping on users | #CyberSecurity #Privacy #Awareness | digital citizenship | Scoop.it

Tor, or “The Onion Router” as it was originally known, is used around the world as an anonymity network. It provides a private method of communication for journalists, those living under authoritarian governments, and people who are just up to some shady stuff. While Tor is still the most robust form of online anonymity we have, it’s not bulletproof as the repeated takedown of The Silk Road and other law enforcement actions have shown. Now, two computer scientists say they’ve uncovered snoops inside the Tor network that may be listening in on what you’re doing.

Envisioning Future Learning: Social Networking and Beyond

Envisioning Future Learning: Social Networking and Beyond | digital citizenship | Scoop.it
In the future, if not now, we will get the bulk of our outside information from social media. It will (and has begun to) take the place of the news networks, doing their job for them. Witness news programs that highlight the latest viral YouTube video as a segment in itself.
How can social networking be redeemed for in-classroom use? Does it even need to be?
Certainly, strict supervision and filtering tools are in order, but are not fail-proof. Still, we don’t always give the idea of collaboration through the digital medium enough credit.
The fact that we as a generation are grappling with the pitfalls of social networking creates even more of an urgency for us to teach our kids “how to do it right.” That’s where digital citizenship comes in.
