Kym Reinstadler, SCN Feature Writer's curator insight, May 21, 6:02 PM

Parents give a resounding thumbs up for using technology to educate.  A nationwide survey of parents of third to 12th graders revealed that 71 percent believe that technology is improving the overall quality of their child’s education. Two-thirds said they believe technology is "leveling the playing field,” giving students from low-income families access to information that might otherwise only be available in schools serving families with economic advantages. A whopping 98 percent of parents said their child uses technology for school work. Eighty-three percent said teachers require their child to do research online. Eighty percent of parents said technology makes it easier for them to be involved in their child’s education, a 78 percent said they monitor their child’s homework and grades online.

Open Up the OutDoors for Kids
Bonnie Bracey Sutton's insight:
Did you know that you own millions of acres of national parks, historic structures, cultural artifacts, ancient forests, snow-capped mountains, and clear blue lakes? Our public lands and waters belong to all Americans and are waiting for you to explore them! To help engage and create our next generation of park visitors, supporters and advocates, we are kicking off the Every Kid in a Park initiative. The immediate goal is to provide an opportunity for each and every 4th grade student across the country to experience their public lands and waters in person throughout the 2015-2016 school year. Soon, you will have access to your own Every Kid in a Park pass. This pass will give you free access to national parks, national forests, national wildlife refuges, and more! The Every Kid in a Park pass will be available for the 2015-2016 school year. Every Kid in a Park joins the Foundation's Open Outdoors for Kids program in helping children learn history, culture, and science while exploring the great outdoors. The initiative is an administration-wide effort among the National Park Service, Forest Service, Department of Education, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.http://www.nationalparks.org/ook/every-kid-in-a-park

Session 65: What is the educational value of blogs, wikis and class/school websites?

Session 65: What is the educational value of blogs, wikis and class/school websites? | digital citizenship | Scoop.it

Session Summary:

Wow… what a fast and furious end to September as the #ukedchat masses discussed all things bloggery!

There are a number of key #ukedchat contributors who have long advocated blogging as a tool for good. In this week’s discussion, they had a chance to convert the rest of us… and believe me, I think it worked!

People spoke overwhelmingly positively about the potential for blogs to offer pupils an audience for their writing, however it soon became clear that blogs can be used in so many different ways and have many different purposes and goals.

We discussed safety and workload concerns, how to use blogs to promote literacy and parental engagement and how blogging can improve pupils’ self-esteem. The doubters (of which I suppose I was one, having not really yet embraced blogging as a class tool…) were very quickly silenced as more and more educators tweeted about the positive impact blogging has had.

I can honestly say that this week’s #ukedchat discussion has given me so much inspiration. In fact, I’m now working on a plan to change my KS3 writers club into a blogging club!
