There is an interesting definition of grit in the article. Although I agree with the premise, I would add that it also includes the ability to get up and shake ourselves off in the course of daily life and work. It is overcoming and responding to challenges we face on a daily basis.

Grit is hard to measure in non-digital settings and this is a necessary attempt to figure out what it looks like in a digital world.

Bridging the digital divide with computational thinking

Bridging the digital divide with computational thinking | digital citizenship | Scoop.it

Google, Apple and Facebook recently published diversity data about its workforce, and the results are clear: Technology has a diversity problem!

Most high schools are not prepared for the complexity and nuances of teaching computer science. Schools must invest in professional development, curriculum and hardware. Then, CS curriculums become obsolete in a few years.

Changing cultural attitudes about computer science may be even a greater challenge. Until we view computational thinking as a core discipline, part of a rounded education, rather than a niche field, we will not make the changes needed to modernize our educational system.

After a break Jackie Gerstein has returned with a new post that looks at self-regulation. What does Gersteing mean when she talks about self-regulation. She lists eight characteristics. Three are below.

* Uses metacognitive processes

* Regulates and controls emotional and cognitive processes

* Manages time for one’s own benefit

After providing the list of 8 characteristic she shares strategies to help students "build and expand their self-regulation skills. Providing students with "metacognitive reflective questions both pre and post activity to help students learn about self-regulation.

Self-regulation has three phases, and she shares a visual about the three phases as well as clear descriptions.

The post goes on to cover additional strategies and also has an excellent SlideShare on Teaching Children Self-Reguation.

At the end of the post she discusses self-regulation as a 21st century skill and learning activities for young people.

As always Gerstein's post are chock full of additional links. Educate yourself and teachers in your building by sharing this informative post.

A must read!  This was very interesting to read.

jhenehan's curator insight, October 13, 2013 12:38 PM

This was a great visual about statistics of bullying.

-28% of students ages 12-18 were bullied in 2008/2009 school year.

-Different forms of bullying. Made fun of, rumors, pushing, threatening, cyberbullying, excluded, forced, and even property destroyed.

-It mentions how people who are bullied are more liekly to have deppression symptoms, harm themselves, and suicidal thoughts.

- It gives you a number to call if you think someone may need help.

-Also, many people are too scared to speak out because of threats, retaliation, and others reactions to them.

-The article mentions to be more than just a bystander.

I personally feel that I learned a lot from this. It is something that I can use as a future educator. It made me aware of the bullying statistics and how important it is for parents to also be involved and to be aware of the growing problems.

These are great posters about bullying to use in your schools.  We can print these posters at CESA 5 if you are interested.

jhenehan's curator insight, October 13, 2013 12:22 PM

This is an interesting representation about "safebook/facebook" and the ways in which one should share information. It shows people the ways in which to be safe while on facebook. The poster shows how you should think about what your posting before you post it. It reminds you to always be kind to others and to connect only with people that you know. Privacy is also very important. Make sure your settings on your facebook are very private. It also shows that people should report bullying and not just let it go. Bullying is a big problem, especially on social media.
