5 Myths and Truths About Kids' Internet Safety

5 Myths and Truths About Kids' Internet Safety | Digital Citizenship for Students, Teachers, and Parents | Scoop.it
Advice from Common Sense Media editors. Help keep your kids' online experiences positive and productive by learning the truth (and ignoring the rumors) about what really makes them safe.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, June 8, 3:39 PM

The first one is pretty important as all children do not turn into bullies. It makes sense that not all kids who use the Internet will turn into bullies. My guess is it would probably be about the same statistical occurrence as pre-Internet, but the footprints are saved.

Bullying is a complex and lived experience that is often a product of being bullied and having seen bullying go unchecked. Teachers and other adults who are good role models digitally and in person greatly help the cause of helping children.

Kate JohnsonMcGregor's curator insight, June 9, 6:06 AM

I have to agree with Gwyneth Jones in that, "there is no safety, only awareness" when teaching kids digital literacy. These are some great myths that need to be understood so that we can better equip our kids to navigate both the real and virtual world effectively.

A Digital Citizenship Survival Kit

A Digital Citizenship Survival Kit | Digital Citizenship for Students, Teachers, and Parents | Scoop.it

"It’s a simple little prop I use when teaching Digital Citizenship to our pK-12 Aurora Huskies students, but I think it sends a powerful message. I love utilizing props to try to get my point across to students and thought that creating a kit full of props would be a great way to reinforce a very important topic in our schools."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, October 18, 2013 8:08 PM

Teaching digital citizenship is not an easy task. This post explores what happens when you create a toolkit of props and use them to help students make connections to online behavior. Below are a couple of examples (quoted from the post):

* Padlock. The padlock is to remind students to set strong passwords and to set up passcode locks on all of their digital devices.

* Tube of Toothpaste. Imagine the information that you are putting online is like the toothpaste coming out of the tube. Once it is out, it is almost impossible to get it all back in the tube!

As you read through the post  you will find many more suggestions and you may come up with some of your own ideas as to what should be in the kit. If you do make a comment and share them here.

Failure and struggle is a necessary part of learning; at times many in education act as though failures are to be avoided at all cost and we should ensure that our students only have opportunities to succeed.  Children learn to walk after falling down; a teacher's job to to motivate them to keep getting up and trying.
