Digital literacy: Learning the Language of the Internet

Digital literacy: Learning the Language of the Internet | Digital Citizenship | Scoop.it

If children are going to be successful users of the Internet it is vital that they learn the 'language' of the Internet and therefore it is imperative that schools focus on digital literacy skills - search techniques and strategies ... boolean operators (words and phrases), useful tricks and tips eg sites -site:edu; site:au, different search tools, different search engines, how to search for images – advanced search and usage rights. As this is a constantly changing environment it is also essential to stay in touch with new developments and to be aware of obsolete search strategies eg the wonderwheel.

Information Literacy, Digital Literacy and Digital Citizenship

Information Literacy, Digital Literacy and Digital Citizenship | Digital Citizenship | Scoop.it

Three important definitions.

 ...

Information Literacy has been defined by the American Library Association in the following way: To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and has the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.

Digital Literacy seems to be very similar: In Wikipedia it starts with a definition that is almost word for word identical to ALA definition of information literacy but adds on three new words:
Digital literacy is the ability to locate, organize, understand, evaluate and analyze information using digital technology.

Digital citizenship refers to the use of these skills to interact with society.

Whole School Learning Community

Whole School Learning Community | Digital Citizenship | Scoop.it

Communication between home and school has been promoted at St Joseph’s as we recognise parents need to be kept in the loop as new media technologies are changing rapidly and whilst this is exciting educationally it can also be daunting for parents. We must be advocates of how web 2.0 tools can enhance and deepen learning whilst ensuring our community is digitally aware and digitally responsible.

Ethical Use

Ethical Use | Digital Citizenship | Scoop.it

Ethical use is a topic, like Internet safety, that needs to be constantly revisited.

Children all too often start using the technology before they learn appropriate conduct, and have often watched other use it incorrectly and assumed that is how it is done. With this said it is vital that parents and schools teach digital etiquette and that they are also good role models of responsible use.
