Landscape in a box by Year 7 » DigGeog | Digital Cartography | Scoop.it

The climax of Year 7′s unit of work on landscapes. Thanks to Alan Parkinson for the original idea of Landscape in a Box. We made use of Alan’s super KS3 Geographer’s Toolkit publication “Look At It This Way” The landscape assessment was completed over half term. More able students included location maps and detailed research notes as part of their work. All students were able to access the task, though possibly the instructions could have been differentiated better.

Spatial Analysis and Statistics - Moving Mapping to Analysis of Mapped Data

Spatial Analysis and Statistics - Moving Mapping to Analysis of Mapped Data | Digital Cartography | Scoop.it

The evolution (or is it revolution?) of GIS technology has certainly taken it well beyond traditional roles of mapping. For over 8,000 years maps were graphic representations of physical features primarily for the purpose of navigation. With the advent of GIS they have changed form to digital representations that are linked to databases and new processing capabilities.

Figure 1 identifies two key trends in the movement from mapping to map analysis. Traditional GIS treats geographic space in a manner similar to our paper map legacy. Points, lines and polygons are used to define discrete spatial objects, such as houses, streams and lakes. In turn, these objects are linked to attributes in a database that describe their characteristics and conditions. The result is a tremendously useful system enabling users to make complex geo-queries of the information and then map the results.....

Reverse Mercatorisms – Flip-Flopped Mercator Map Distortions

Reverse Mercatorisms – Flip-Flopped Mercator Map Distortions | Digital Cartography | Scoop.it

Mercator shrinks the Equator! So protest Kai Krause and a billion Africans, upset that the Mercator projection – used by Google Maps and found on countless grade school walls around the globe – makes their vast continent look positively puny compared to the rest of the world.

And they’re right! For example, consider icy Greenland. At 836,000 square miles, it’s only 7-percent of the land area of Africa. However, à la Mercator, the two appear equal:

Google Lat Long: Enhanced search in Google Earth 6.2

Google Lat Long: Enhanced search in Google Earth 6.2 | Digital Cartography | Scoop.it

Lao-tzu once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” In Google Earth, that single step is often searching for the name of the place you want to go. The search field is the gateway to all of the amazing places you might visit, and for the recent release of Google Earth 6.2, we worked hard to make it even more powerful and easy to use.

As a result, searching for a location in Google Earth 6.2 is a bit different: we’ve streamlined the look and feel of the search interface, removing tabs and consolidating all the search fields together into one (just like Google Search). We’ve also added features that Google Earth previously didn’t have, like transit directions and search layers. And we’ve made sure that underneath these shiny new features, you still have access to the power and flexibility of KML.

SpatiaLABS from Esri Press are independent computer lab activities that introduce, enhance, and reinforce spatial reasoning and analytic skills that apply to a variety of disciplines. Students working with SpatiaLABS use mapping technology and visualization tools, including Esri's ArcGIS software, to solve real-world problems.

The unique lab activities focus on teaching students how to approach a spatial problem rather than the mechanics of geospatial tools. Covering a broad range of subjects, SpatiaLABS include more than 50 titles such as Forest Planning for Sensitive Wildlife Species, Impacts of Sea Level Rise and Storms on Manhattan, Predicting West Nile Virus Outbreaks, and Customer Profiling: Demographic and Lifestyle Segmentation.

The Esri Federal GIS Conference Plenary - Spatially Adjusted

The Esri Federal GIS Conference Plenary - Spatially Adjusted | Digital Cartography | Scoop.it

Jack says 10.1 will be released in about 8 weeks. He calls this Esri’s biggest release, ever. He says it will make ArcGIS easier. He says it takes part on the old Desktop and Server, but also in the “cloud”. Of course, Esri started with ArcGIS Online (which may or may not be ArcGIS.com, I can’t tell). It is, according to Esri, content mangement. He says that ArcGIS Online is about Intelligent Web Maps (so it isn’t content management). The idea is that you have one map in ArcGIS Online and share it with other Esri clients. ArcGIS Online enables; GIS, self-service mapping, office and organization.....
