New Research: Brands Are Wasting Time And Money On Social Media

New Research: Brands Are Wasting Time And Money On Social Media | Digital Visibility | Scoop.it
Stop making Facebook the center of your relationship marketing efforts," says Nate Elliott, VP and principal analyst at Forrester.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, Today, 11:25 AM

The research shared in this article is quite surprising.  The latest data shared from Forrester Research shows that top brands posting on Facebook and Twitter reach only about 2% of their audience. Engagement stats are even worse  -- a mere 0.07% of followers actually interact with posts.

Yikes!

And what does this have to do with business storytelling? Well, one thing it might be pointing to is that if you want to share and gather stories from audiences, social media might be the wrong place. Forrester concludes that the best way to engage  customers and prospects is through email.

We already know that blog posts, email and email newsletters allow for better storytelling  and are still very popular. You have more space, and can craft better stories. Social media posts are more like conversations, where stories may or may not show up. But  as we know, stories create higher engagement if you tap into the dynamic of story sharing (that means equal activity on both story listening and storytelling).

As we get more sophisticated in business storytelling, part of that maturity may be learning the best mediums for storytelling instead of thinking that every medium will work.

The recommendation about email makes sense to me. So you might want to read this article, understand a bit more about the research and recommendations, and go make adjustments accordingly.

What do you think about what this research says, and what will you be doing differently? Inquiring minds want to know ...

The article "The 6 Step Social Media Marketing Strategy Plan for Your Business" is a quick article addressing six steps to a social media plan for businesses. The first step of the plan is to identify a social media manager. The second step is to create branded pages. The third step is to develop a planning calendar. The fourth step is to create engaging content. The fifth step is to monitor responses and track results. And the last step is to use results to better understand consumer behavior and reaction to your products/services. The article is wrapped up discussing how if you approach social media like any other form of marketing and development plan, it can become a very useful and effective tool that compliments traditional marketing strategies.

I found this article to be a good read. There were a few typos which shouldn't have been there, but overall the message was effective. It can be very useful information for businesses trying to incorporate a social media marketing strategy plan.

Morgan Lefkof's curator insight, November 23, 9:25 PM

This article discusses a social media marketing strategy plan for a business. This strategy uses six steps. The first step is to find a social media manager. It is important to have someone in charge of monitoring the platforms and posting content. The second step is to create branded pages. Once the company decides which sites they want to use, it should then create the sites and make sure they all have the same look and feel as the company’s website. The third step is to develop a planning calendar. This will outline the number of posts, time of the posts, and the content in each post. The fourth step is to generate engaging content. The content should include something followers would be willing to share. The fifth step is to monitor responses and track results. There are many outside companies that use social media analytic programs that record feedback. The last step is to use results to understand consumer behavior and reaction to your business. This can help to identify strengths and weaknesses of a company.

Social media use is continuing to increase at a rapid rate. It is important that companies create a strategy so that their company does not go under. This article gives a list of ways a company could successfully create this strategy. The better the strategy, the better the company will do.

Understanding the progress you're making on social media can be rapidly overwhelming: not only are there chances you're on more than one social network but you're also likely to manage pages on top of profiles.

These tools are great and can help you track progress on a lot of KPI's.

Which is also why they're dangerous.

Don't get me wrong: I'm an analytical, data-driven guy so I'm a strong believer that data trumps opinions most of the time. But my point is that it's easy to get lost and confused by all the social KPI's you can track:

- followers

- retweets

- likes

- clicks

- favorites

- replies

- lists

- ....

You name it...

As Mark Schaefer put it - perhaps better than anyone else - social media engagement is not a strategy. It's only a path to building brand awareness or increasing leads and sales.

So while these tools are very useful, you still need to connect your social KPI's with ROI KPI's to demonstrate - or not - that your social media metrics' growth converts into something that has positive business returns

Very often, this will mean creating conversion hooks for your social media audience to become either a subscriber, a lead or a user - which is why you need a content hub for your social media publishing. Two trends are at work here:

1. Social Media Publishing and Content Marketing are more and more overlapping as social helps amplify content and content helps engage followers.

2. Social Selling and Inbound Marketing are driving more use of social media and more content publishing activity as a way to grow revenue.

So looking at these tools is a great opportunity to think about your overall goals and how to connect social media and content marketing in a coherent strategy to achieve ROI.

A Guide to Social Video, and Where it Fits in Your Marketing Plan | Digital Visibility | Scoop.it
Social video is often a confusing concept for brands, largely because it’s such a broad category. Like many brands, here at Hootsuite we have struggled with questions about the perfect length social media videos, what video platforms to use and how to promote these videos. What we have learned is social video marketing is about getting your video shared, and everything else is secondary.

Long or short, Vine or YouTube videos have to be shareable and that could mean different things for different brands and different audiences. This also means that whether you’re a big enterprise with a professional video team or a small business owner with an iPhone, there’s a way to make videos work for you.

To help you understand social media videos and increase your chances of getting your videos shared, we have created this complete guide to social videos and where it fits in your marketing plan.

Does My Brand Need Multiple Social Accounts?

Does My Brand Need Multiple Social Accounts? | Digital Visibility | Scoop.it

It's common for a business to have social media presence on different networks, but some use multiple accounts that serve different needs on each one.

Via Kamal Bennani

Justin Argyelan's curator insight, November 18, 8:01 PM

How do you run your social networks? While it’s common for a business to have social media presence on different networks, some businesses go a step further with multiple accounts that serve different business needs on each network. Maintaining multiple accounts for different business needs typically makes the most sense for larger companies. Not only will big brands have the social resources to manage multiple accounts, but their larger size may also make it challenging to meet all business needs with a single profile. If your business has divisions that target very different audiences — whether that means different product offerings or an active customer support presence — having accounts that focus on each audience could help you connect with the people you most need to reach. Smaller businesses aren’t likely to have scaled up to the point where they need multiple presences to serve their audience. And whether large or small, a business with a singular focus might not find much benefit to multiple accounts. The advantages of multiple social accounts are you can better target different audiences or different subsets of your audience, and you won’t spam your audience with content they don’t necessarily care about. On the other hand, the disadvantages include it taking more time and staff to manage multiple social accounts, which makes this more difficult for smaller businesses to pull off, and multiple accounts can lead to customer confusion, especially if they aren’t clearly branded or aren’t very active. Multiple accounts for different business purposes is a social strategy that can work out really well for the right type of business, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Before launching any new accounts, companies should be sure to carefully weigh these pros and cons to make sure it’s a good idea for your brand.

Is Your Social Marketing Strategy Future Proof?

Is Your Social Marketing Strategy Future Proof? | Digital Visibility | Scoop.it

The era of free social marketing is over. If you haven’t heard that warning from me already, chances are you’ve heard it from the slew of other industry leaders, analysts and media also sounding the alarm.

Social networks have to make money — and they can’t do it by continuing to offer their audience engagement platforms to brands for free. So, with Facebook at the helm, they’re evolving into ad platforms, slowly chipping away at the number of fans a brand can reach without paying to sponsor its content. On top of that, there are 7x as many users on social media than there were just five years ago, and those users — both brands and individuals — are also creating and sharing record amounts of content. And as a result, news feeds surging with more brands, people and content than anyone could realistically consume. The combination has left brand reach hovering at an all-time low on both Facebook and Twitter, with the average unsponsored brand post reaching less than two percent of its fans
