IP, Patents, Copyright, You

By Bruce Arnold - http://bit.ly/ycuRQk

@ConversationEDU

IDEAS AND OWNERSHIP: The concept of protecting ideas and innovation by legal means dates back to antiquity. But in the age of the internet and multinational business models, many of the existing laws are under strain, their suitability and ultimate purpose called into question.

Bruce Arnold - http://bit.ly/yS6Ji8 - kicks off a new series on The Conversation looking at where we are, where we were and where we’re going with regards to patents, copyright, trademarks and IP.

It’s become a cliché that most Australians are part of an information society or information economy. In fact, we’re all part of an intellectual property society. Intellectual property (IP) affects what we consume and what we create. It also affects when we’re born and when we die, given modern medicine is founded on pharmaceuticals and devices that are encouraged by intellectual property law.

This article offers a snapshot, quick and irreverent, of what IP is, why it’s controversial, and the difference between some key terms.

Bypass WordPress’ clunky editor and take advantage of Word’s impressive graphics tools.

Have you ever wished writing a post in WordPress was as easy as writing in Microsoft Word?

Many may not know it, but you can write a post in Word and then publish directly to your WordPress site.

Although you can obviously write your posts in Word and then copy them into the WordPress editor, maybe the biggest reason to post directly from Word is to take advantage of the impressive graphics capabilities it offers. From image manipulation to “SmartArt” to sophisticated charts and graphs, Microsoft Word has a lot to offer.

A Simple Example of Some MS Word Graphics in a WordPress Post:

Words to Avoid in Emails #Infographic

By Douglas Karr - http://bit.ly/zAPvxR -

I felt a little better about my own email habits after reading seeing this infographic from Boomerang.

The average email user receives 147 messages every day, and spends more than 2 and a half hours on email per day.

Your email marketing provider should offer segmentation and scheduling so you can minimize the number of messages you’re sending out and highly target them… gaining the trust and attention of your subscribers.

Either way, you’ll avoid simply winding up with every email in the trash… or worse… in the junk email folder!

#Infographics As Press Releases: 3 Beautiful Examples

By Meryl Serouya

A study shows that multimedia elements increase the number of views a message receives. With that in mind, it might be time to reconsider your next press release.

It makes sense. After all, we’re a visual species. Since our earliest days, images have captured our attention. They have been at the heart of storytelling, one of our first methods of expression and a fundamental tool for education.

Infographics, which are more detailed than photos and convey information more quickly than videos, tap into this visual learning style.

They can prove especially powerful in press releases by extending the core message and highlighting the important components to bring the text to life.

Plus, they’re inviting.

According to a recent analysis of press releases by PR Newswire, the inclusion of multimedia assets significantly improves the number of views a message generates. In the age of social media, any advantage in grabbing a slice of your audience’s attention is worth seizing upon.

Infographics cut straight to the point, simplify complex information, and can wow the reader in an instant. As with any piece of content, an infographic must be relevant, interesting, and meaningful; it should not rely solely on eye-catching artwork, nor should the content be overwhelming. An effective infographic elicits an instant reaction and entices people to want to learn more.

What I enjoy most about an Infographic is the creative flexibility it affords PR professionals. For example, the press release fits into a fairly standard format. When I’m given the task of writing one—and as a PR pro that happens often—I begin outlining the draft in my head, running through the checklist of elements.

Infographics, on the other hand, help us to detour from our usual template and color outside the lines. This doesn’t mean we have to be artists or designers, though it does require us to revisit our early days and think visually.

Although Infographics have a place in almost any message, they are most useful when presenting:

• Survey results that may be cumbersome in a lengthy text format;
• Statistical data that can lose the fleeting interest of a reader;
• Comparison research that will have a more a dramatic effect with visuals;
• Messages targeted to multilingual audiences (images are a universal language, right?);
• Any other information that just isn’t sexy without graphical elements.

Numerous companies are taking advantage of Infographics and including them in press releases. Here are three great examples:

Think You Need a Website? Maybe Not ... #Infographic

By Basekit

The thought of building a website from scratch and then trying to get people to visit it might be daunting for a novice. There's a steep learning curve to climb - design, code, domains, hosting, security, SEO.

This is probably why more small businesses are now putting more time and attention into their Facebook pages, Twitter accounts or other social media profiles.

These channels are easier to master and out your business in front of people on sites they use everyday. Its not for everyone though – this infographic, produced by online website builder

Basekit helps illustrate the thought process involved with deciding whether or not you actually need to build a website.

What Is Visualization?

By Nathan Yau - http://bit.ly/A4kJGE

@flowingdata

This seems like a straightforward question, but it’s proven to be a difficult one to answer.

Even visualization researchers – people who think about the subject all day and every day – don’t have a clear definition of what visualization is.

Is it synonymous with information graphics?

Does visualization have to be computer generated?

Does data have to be involved, or can it be abstract?

The answers vary depending on who you ask.

To me, visualization is a medium. It’s not just an analysis tool nor just a way to prove a point more clearly through data.

Visualization is like books. There are different writing styles and categories, there are textbooks and there are novels, and they communicate ideas in different ways for varied purposes. And just like authors who use words to communicate, there are rules that you should always follow and others that are guidelines that you can bend and break.

When you think of visualization as a medium rather than a monolithic tool, it’s something much more flexible that can be used for a lot of things. It’s also more exciting. You can tell stories with data through analysis, journalism, or art.

Visualization can be fun or serious; it can be beautiful and emotional or barebones and to the point.

In the end, it’s still all about the data ...

For newbies in the business of crafting websites, the purpose and technicality behind server header responses can often be a little mind baffling to get to grips with. Although there are essentially so much to learn, only a few are common and essential to web professionals and the average user.

So what is a server header response, anyway?

Well, let’s shed some light on them by delving deep into the most common server header responses.

How do we tell apart a 200 from a 404?

5 Key Trends Supercharging Today's Digital PR

By Stacy Green - http://bit.ly/xC9ymS

@stacygreen

In 2012, Social Media will move beyond growth to saturation.

This means that digital public relations is changing quickly.

Recently, I had an opportunity to speak about the opportunities and trends in digital public relations at the PR News Digital Summit.

Here’s a quick look at what I think social media saturation and mobile growth mean for public relations this year:

1. Beyond the Second Screen: 24 Hours of Screens

According to Comscore’s recent social media study -  http://bit.ly/y0s6P3 , the social media category as a whole is on the cusp of becoming the dominant form of online content; it accounted for 16.6% of Internet time in 2011.

And this year it is expected to surpass portals as the most engaging online activity.

Engagement is the key word there.

Social media saturation coupled with the rapid growth of mobile, tablets and connected TVs mean we are beyond the second screen — we are now at more than 24 hours’ worth of screens per day. There are even apps to influence your dreams!

People are constantly connected and consuming media, which sounds daunting but it is great news for media creators. And now PR professionals are not soley pitching the media, but they too are media creators.

Design is Marketing

By Chuck Longanecker - http://bit.ly/xkdU4s

@dtelepathy

Everywhere you turn, people are talking about design. It’s been hailed as the core ingredient to the success of everything from ad campaigns, to products, to entire companies.

We can thank Steve Jobs (among many others) for this design-focused renaissance.

He trained consumers to expect things that not only look great, but are designed to “make sense,” and create experiences that are, in his words, “magical”.

Great design makes products more useful, allowing the user to be more effective, leading to greater satisfaction and, frankly, happiness.

This market expectation means that design is no longer optional; it is required for success. In today’s design-minded culture your product can be easily disrupted or ignored without thoughtful design.

When it comes to designing for the Web, there are core actions you want users to take. You may want them to sign up, download something, buy something, subscribe or share with their friends. Each can be optimized through design that meets the user’s needs.

The Other Side of Social Media: Inside the APP-based Revolution #Infographic

By Haydn Shaughnessy   http://bit.ly/wlG0Kc

@haydn1701

Social media seems like a fairly self-sufficient activity – it’s all about changing the way companies communicate, right? How they engage?

Most of us in social media lack some of the knowledge we need to understand how business is really changing.

Mashery - http://bit.ly/yMfNRy - are one of the leading API management companies, and APIs are one of those concepts that deter the wider marketing community from really grasping the oportunities in front of them.

The Infographic "The Hyper Channel Future" is a short primer on how some companies are reinventing themselves around social and apps.

How Meta: An #Infographic Explains the Infographic Phenomenon | Articles

By Michael Sebastian

This was inevitable....it makes sense that someone created an Infographic about … Infographics.

It’s from Brent Csutoras, a social media marketing consultant and entrepreneur, and although the text is a bit small, it offers insights on a variety of areas related to the trend.

Infographics continue to rise in popular, buy hey… why shouldn’t they?

Infographics embody everything we want from content. They are highly visual, with easy to digest information, in most cases teach us something interesting we did not know, and do it all in a matter of minutes. Additionally, it is much harder to just duplicate or resuse an Infographic without providing credit, so you end up getting more of the mileage you deserve from your efforts.

One Infographic I have always enjoyed is the Infographic about Infographics, created by Ivan Cash, so I wanted to share it here for you all to enjoy.
