From Ink to Inbound: The History of Marketing | Daily Infographic

From Ink to Inbound: The History of Marketing | Daily Infographic | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Marketing has invaded every part of our lives, but it developed relatively recently, not emerging until the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A lot has changed since then, with strategies shifting from outbound marketing that “interrupts the consumer” to inbound marketing, which is focused on understanding them. The market speaks, and it’s up to professionals to identify the needs of consumers — and then sell to them.

Since first successful national marketing campaigns made their way out of Madison Avenue our society has learned to respect the value marketing brings to a firm. Now more than ever, marketing has cemented its role as not only an asset to sales, but to customer acquisition, relationship management and retention.

From the very first radio ad in 1922 to the age of the Internet, marketing has responded to consumer behavior and moved deftly from trend to trend. Take a look to see where marketing is now, as well as just how far it has come....

Stunning Trends That Affect Ecommerce Sellers and Consumers - Design Reviver

Stunning Trends That Affect Ecommerce Sellers and Consumers - Design Reviver | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Online Shopping is Constant, Yet Online Buying is Not

Emarketer reports that a 2014 survey showed that 78% of respondents said they often partook in “webrooming,” before going to a brick and mortar store to purchase. This is a form of showrooming, since it’s convenient to conduct research and compare prices online.

Analysts assume that this is such a common trend because customers often want to touch and examine the products via online shops before buying. Obviously this trend could go the opposite way, with consumers looking at items in-store, then buying online for the cheaper prices, but surveys show that it’s rather common to actually make the purchase in-store.

Why is this the case? Because the internet is filled with information for comparisons, so even though the stores have a lack of information, it has been serving some of them quite well....

What's Better for Driving ROI: Inbound Marketing or Content Marketing?

What's Better for Driving ROI: Inbound Marketing or Content Marketing? | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it
The market seems to be confused about the difference between inbound marketing and content marketing—how each is defined, how they are applied, and the benefit of each. But primarily, marketers are simply struggling to determine which is better at driving ROI. A variety of content measurement techniques are available for marketers to track content performance, but still no exact formula exists to show content marketing ROI.

Why are marketers struggling? It’s because we’ve put the cart before the horse and the egg before the chicken. Simply put, we’ve forgotten about the basics.

In order for anyone to be successful in what they do, they must first understand the world they live in, make sense of it, and then try to find solutions. In marketing terms, marketers need to understand the definition of inbound marketing and content marketing before determining where their dollars are best invested for driving ROI.

It's Friday and time for some fun. Here the owners (Bert and John Jacobs) of the Life Is Good Company share part of their backstory.

In particular, they tell how the Beatles' album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" influenced them as kids, and still does today in running their business. Fascinating!

Even better at the end there's a video where Bert Jacobs shares how to blur the lines between work and play. Yes!

Have fun reading this article and watching the video. Play more and don't forget to share your own backstories :)

Millennial Schmillennial | immediate future

Millennial Schmillennial | immediate future | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, if you are consuming content online hardly a day goes by without someone somewhere dropping the “M” word.

Millennial.

“How millennial are you?”; “The Millennials Are Coming”; “10 Surprising Habits of Millennial Art Collectors”; and “3 Insights To Help Your Millennial Marketing Strategy Succeed”; are typical headlines that somehow find their way into everything.

Millennials are a hot topic for good reason. The estimated buying power of Millennials is around $1.3 trillion in the US and $10 trillion globally.

In the not-too-distant future, they will become the largest generation with the greatest combined purchasing power in human history.

It’s no wonder that brands are falling all over themselves, blinded by the dollar signs in their eyes, to try and figure out this audience.

This has led to the publication of countless pieces of content that offer helpful advice and endless Dos & Don’ts lists of what to do when trying to communicate with a Millennial audience.

It is for this reason that we need to step back and consider a few facts that everyone seems to be overlooking when it comes to Millennials....

In a world where big brands talk about ROI, it's important to have this discussion with small business owners. Every time I have a new client, I remind them of the fact that they will not get real results until they actually build relationships with prospects.

I can't remember where I read that people need to see something 20 times before they decide to take action. This speaks to the need of approaching social business with a lot more care.
