Top Ten Blog Posts from 2014

It's become something of a tradition to review the most popular articles from your year. More than just sneaking in an extra blog post on New Year's Eve, I think it's a great exercise... an audit, if you will. While I may have my own personal favourites, as a blogger, what needs to matter more to me is which articles are your favourites. Which topics and posts resonated with you more than all the others?

And while there were some interesting surprises, it's also gratifying to see that several of my ideas and strategies this past year paid off. I put a lot of effort into making a few posts epic - and your responses were genuinely appreciated.

So this is a Thank You post to each of you. Maybe you've seen all these articles, or maybe you'll catch a couple you missed. Either way, I sincerely appreciate you and am looking forward to a fantastic 2015!

#Blogging  #SocialMedia #ContentMarketing

P.S. I would be remiss if I didn't mention a few people who really stood out this year - people upon whom I depend and owe a great deal. THANK YOU, each of you, for everything you've done to help and support me.

2015: The Year Of The Mobile Singularity

2015: The Year Of The Mobile Singularity | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it
Many enterprises seem content to toe-dip in the mobile deluge. That's unwise. As Facebook, Uber and a host of mobile-first companies up-end traditional ways of communicating and commuting, companies that don't take a mobile-first position risk becoming the Microsofts of their industries: big and profitable from yesterday's businesses, but struggling for relevance in tomorrow's enterprise.

In 2015 we should expect to see enterprises finally get serious about mobile as they stare obsolescence in the face.

The Mobile Singularity

Given our fixation with our smartphones (the average person looks at her phone over 200 times per day, which will jump to 400-500 times per day when wearables take off), it won't surprise anyone that mobile is big. Exactly how big, however, is almost shocking.

Consider data from Ericsson, which suggests that 90% of the global population over 6 years of age will own a mobile phone by 2020, with 9.5 billion mobile subscriptions by the same year:

‘We Always Give People a Path Into Our Technology’: Inside IBM’s Incredible Content Marketing

‘We Always Give People a Path Into Our Technology’: Inside IBM’s Incredible Content Marketing | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Global technology and consulting company IBM builds a lot of neat things: supercomputers, game console microprocessors, artificial intelligence. Few of its brilliant inventions are easily explained to non-technological folks, yet for the 103-year-old company, that’s okay. The tech giant has found a way to be extremely innovative even when its inventions and services are perplexing.

IBM’s content marketing has spanned genres, continents, and artforms. With each iteration of the IBM story, it never misses a beat in delighting consumers. It doesn’t try to game SEO. It doesn’t trick consumers into buying its products or following its brand on Facebook. Most importantly, it doesn’t only talk about itself.

Together, IBM employees run at least 45 self-driven blogs that the company promotes and wants you to follow. The company has nearly 400,000 Facebook followers, more than 120,000 Twitter followers, more than a few Tumblrs that are regularly updated, and a YouTube channel with more than 40,000 subscribers. IBM has published at least 120 videos since the start of this year, or three videos a week.

In May the company launched a series of commercials profiling its clients. Called “Made with IBM,” the series detailed the success of each company—and smartly ignored their connection to IBM. It wasn’t a product endorsement; it was a storytelling collaboration. As a result, several of the videos reached six-digit views on YouTube.

Why Responsive Design Is A 2015 MUST! & What Thinking Mobile First MEANS via Ez & Scenttrail

Why Responsive Design Is A 2015 MUST! & What Thinking Mobile First MEANS via Ez & Scenttrail | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Scenttrail Note Responsive Design
I wanted a post to explain Responsive Design's SEO implications in easy clear language and this ex.no post does that beautifully. I wanted an easy explanation of WHY RESPONSIVE so I could blow your mind a little.

Responsive impacts SEO because Google wants to be relevant to mobile search. The Ez.no post explains that dimension well, but there's another dimension rarely considered - Responsive Design's impact on data architecture.

Data architecture seems a lost science. Having spent most of the December tunneling into a friend's website (http://www.Moon-Audio.com) I can tell you there is NOTHING more important than how you classify information on your site.

The tug-of-war between search spiders and people has a new dimension now - mobile people. Mobile people need FLAT design, fewer options and smaller more visual presentation. Bless WordPress for making it so easy to Accordion a site's design, but if you don't think about HOW your information will be displayed on smartphone you are nuts.

Mobile people need different kinds of presentation and design than even laptopers. Mobile people need flatter, louder and more engaging User Interfaces. They need simple connection (to friends and social nets) and swiipe-y "waterfall" content.

You can't create "waterfall content" because your blog has rsponsive design built in. You get a site that doesn't sit well in its mobile coat. Better to STOP and RESTART with MOBILE FIRST as your content marketing guide and that means:

1. Visuals tease snippets.

2. Snippets tease deeper exploration (outside to social nets or inside to Snippet Plus content).

We don't READ on mobile devices we scan, swipe and send. Look at your GPlus or Facebook timelines. What gets all the engagement?

1. Pictures.
2. Questions
3. Videos

Some content such as contests and games combine those elements with deadlines, prizes and competition (always good for mobile). Are you thinking MOBILE FIRST? Share HOW and we will write a http://www.curagami.com post about how to THINK Mobile First.

Thanks & Happy New Year. Marty

12 Of The Biggest Content Curation Myths (Busted)

12 Of The Biggest Content Curation Myths (Busted) | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

There is a lot of misunderstanding about content curation. Many see it as a pale copy of aggregation, others as an unethical practice.

Here is a very interesting article by Julia McCoy that will, hopefully, put an end to all the myths out there, including:

- content curation as a fully automated process.

- content curation as a copy-and-paste process.

How customers choose your brand

How customers choose your brand | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Shoppers today are overwhelmed with choice. Wherever they go they are overloaded with information, forced to choose between competing offers at almost every hour of the day.

But if vendors are offering all this extra choice to increase buyer satisfaction, they might well be making a mistake. Neuroscientists believe that increasing the comparisons available may actually reduce happiness, for the simple reason that people tend to regret the decision they made because of the additional options they couldn’t pick....

Why Your Customers’ Social Identities Matter - HBR

Why Your Customers’ Social Identities Matter - HBR | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Do you remember your teenage years? It was a time when peer approval mattered. Copying or getting the attention of popular classmates was synonymous with experiencing 15 minutes of fame -- and sometimes longer.

Things haven't changed much since our passage to adulthood. As much as we would love to dance "as though no one is watching us," we still seek approval from the outside world, especially if it's in our immediate surroundings.

That's why I always advise business owners and entrepreneurs to take an honest look at themselves before jumping on the social media bandwagon. The way audiences see themselves determines their behavior.

In one of the most thorough and interesting articles I have read this year, Guy Champniss, Hugh N. Wilson, and Emma K. Macdonald highlight how context impacts our multiple social identities.

"Recent research into why people put solar panels on their houses shows very nicely how this works. You might think that their main motivation is reducing energy costs or concern for the environment. But it turns out that the strongest factor is that other solar-powered homes are nearby. Your neighborhood represents a powerful social identity, and it colors how you think about decisions related to your home. If you see solar panels on houses around yours, you’re likely to feel that you should get them as well."

The article is quite long but worth more than a read!
