The Power of Story Branding: Which country does the world most good?

It's an unexpected side effect of globalization: problems that once would have stayed local—say, a bank lending out too much money—now have consequences worl...

Simon Anholt recently delivered this TED talk and it is a doozy on several fronts.

What caught my attention when watching this is the point Simon makes about a nation's brand story -- i.e. reputation -- and its effect on economic prosperity plus being able to make a difference in the world.

If this is true for nations, it also holds true for business. Which is one reason why companies embracing doing good in the world as a fundamental way of doing business are gaining more customers in the marketplace. This is beyond simply attaching your company to a social cause.

This is a terrific talk and you will be surprised at which countries do the most good in the world. Simon indicates that these countries consciously create their story. People are attracted to that story, which they in turn tell. At least that seems to be part of the dynamic Simon talks about.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this -- or maybe not. In the end, if you wanted your country to be in the top 10, what parts of your country's story needs to change? What kind of story do you want to be a part of?

If this was a business list, what would need to happen to have your company be in the top 10? What kind of story (stories) would it need to be embodying and sharing?

(From the article): Twitter is not like Facebook or Instagram. While Twitter has now implemented its version of an algorithm, it is very different from that of the Facebook algorithm. The fact remains that after ten minutes of publishing your tweet, few people will ever see the tweet. Therefore, you need to consistently tweet throughout the day. I suggest 15+ times per day, including retweets and replies. Most of my clients tweet 30+ times per day. Does that seem like too much? I assure you that it is not. If you don’t tweet 15+ times per day, you’ll limit your engagement, reach, follower growth and other measurable goals such as website and link clicks.

Marketing Secret: Why real-time storytelling with real-time listening works best

Marketing Secret: Why real-time storytelling with real-time listening works best | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

"To get real-time storytelling right, marketers need to rethink the storytelling process, emphasizing listening first and foremost. Many people, and in particular many marketers, have quite an idealised, romantic concept of the storytelling process."

Happy Monday! Here's what I love about this article: the author understands what real time storytelling is, and that to make it work, marketers must engage in real time listening. Why do this? To accelerate results.

As the author Keith Richey points out, most marketing narratives are created in isolation back at the office. However, "...enduring narratives that are dreamed up in isolation have a hard time changing and responding to what’s happening out there amongst their audiences."

So true! The opportunity Richey points out is for marketers to listening and dig into real time conversations/engagement that is happening on social networks/the web and tap into the stories being told. The next step is to respond to the stories being told with ones of your own.

Here's what Richey misses, though: he assumes listening to stories is the same as listening to any conversation. But it is not. Story listening requires listening without an agenda (so people feel genuinely heard), and then asking reflective questions of the storyteller to understand meaning, motivation, desires, emotions, etc. Story listening on social media/the web is no different. So maximize the opportunity -- learn to deliberately story listen instead of just winging it. Watch my TEDx talk for the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahN_FDHFWmg

Read all of what Richey has to say and start your story listening now, and make it a great week!

10 Myths about YouTube Users [Infographic] | Daily Infographic

10 Myths about YouTube Users [Infographic] | Daily Infographic | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

I was recently offered a free cable subscription and I said “Why? I don’t have a TV, and all my shows are on YouTube.” I would like to think that none of the stereotypes listed here apply to me. Fortunately, usage statistics can shed light on the reality of negative stereotypes of YouTube users.

The stereotypes in this infographic are really stereotypes of internet users, or Internauts, in general. I think these negative generalizations came out of the fact that computers were largely marketed as toys for boys when personal computers were first coming out. Of course, computers, and the internet, are much, much more than that, but when people kept interacting with this thing that had been presented as a toy, it was interpreted by the wider public as immature and unhealthy.

As this infographic on the growth of the internet shows, internet use exploded in the decade between 2002 and 2012, and is only increasing as more and more of the world comes online. Sterotypes of internet users are going to die pretty quickly as the vast majority of people on earth join the ranks....

The surprising habits of original thinkers

How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies "originals": thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals -- including embracing failure. "The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most," Grant says. "You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones."
