Yes, @Martin (Marty) Smith, community building is hard. You have to be present, authentic, and pay attention to your message. These are three things we often talk about, but in a superficial manner, IMO.

 

A brand cannot just drop messages and leave. The team has to go beyond the obvious and grandiloquent words, and work in the shadows to reap rewards.

 

In my 13 years as a freelancer, I have spent more time doing research, interacting with people, and curating content than actually creating posts. I'm not here just to make money. I also want to meet interesting people and build relationships that matter.

 

Another excellent piece from one of the hardest working marketers I know.

I was having a discussion with one of my oldest and closest friends the other day about his career. He wants to go farther in the world of public relations but doesn’t quite know what he needs to get there. So, as an enterprising go-getter, he started making connections and asking other PR pros what he needs to know in this day and age to get ahead of the competition.


What one professional told him made me laugh and then made me think.


“To get ahead, you need to know two things: Google Analytics and SEO.


”This kind of stopped me in my tracks. Yes, analytics and SEO are extremely important in the digital world. They go hand in hand – one promotes your website while the other tracks how you’re doing.


For instance, you can be at the top of the rankings for a key term, but if your bounce rate for that page is insanely high, you might need to change some things. SEO only gets you the attention you need; analytics will tell you exactly how long and what happens after the user sees your page.


But what shocked me is that it wasn’t a marketing executive that was telling my friend how essential these tools are, but a public relations professional with many, many years in the business.


So has public relations and marketing suddenly become the same thing?...

Here's a great post about storytelling going right at Expedia. Their social cause is supporting St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The digital story they share about their work with St. Jude's definitely got to me. Good job Expedia!

 

The author of the post, Nicola Brown, analyzes the video and what Expedia is doing for the hospital's patients, sharing with us what makes it work. 

 

Point #3 is about rich storytelling and it's a point well worth remembering. When working with leaders, I always make the effort to promote rich, nuanced, multi-layered storytelling to produce maximum benefits. Thin, simplistic stories will only take you so far.

 

Anyway, enjoy this piece and the video. It is amazing.

Many marketers are greedy and blind. They create too much content without really knowing why. They just follow what "experts" tell them to do. 

 

Nick Westergaarden is right when he says that, "If we want more effective content marketing, we have to get smart with strategy." We need to do better and ask ourselves the right questions...
