The 10 Best Corporate Blogs in the World

The 10 Best Corporate Blogs in the World | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

My reaction to most company blogs: “Blah, Blah and Double Blah!”

I recently taught a class on corporate blogging at the amazing social media marketing graduate program at Rutgers University.  In my research for the class, I pored through hundreds of websites looking for examples of the best company blogs in the world.

Amid the coal pile that is the state of corporate blogging today, I did manage to find a few diamonds that don’t bore to tears with pronouncements, promotions and product announcements (the Killer P’s)....

Karen Dietz's curator insight, April 18, 6:07 PM

I'm heading to Portland, OR soon for a conference of PR and branding professionals and the theme is Story. As I'm thinking about the conference, I found this SlideShare program and thing it's really great -- because it's all about how to think better about branding and its link to customer experiences that then generate stories.

As I've pointed out before, story has impacted branding in huge ways. But it takes awhile for old mind-sets to fully make the change. Me included! So it's always helpful to have a few reminders around like this piece.

All the principles here can be actualized using stories. That's good news! And the examples shared here are good too.

Happy branding!

Good usability and web design advice from Neil Patel, who points out eight key things to pay serious attention to when optimizing your page content and layout, based on what eye-tracking data reports show.

I can only confirm, that based on my own experience as a web publisher, these eight points are indeed all very important and often underestimated.

In particular I'd like to highlight three:

1) Info chunks are best

2) You need a lot of white space

3) Use pictures of people

4 Storytelling Tips From Ken Burns And His Latest Film, "The Address" | Co.Create | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

"Ken Burns is so famous for making historical documentaries that bring American history to life that there’s a video production effect named after a technique he pioneered. The “Ken Burns Effect”--the technique of zooming and slow-panning over an image that might be well over a hundred years old--is one of the hallmarks of the man’s visual storytelling style.

The master documentarian returns with a stylistic departure--a cinema verite-style film that captures a group of boys at a small Vermont school as they memorize the Gettysburg Address--and shares what the experience helped him realize about storytelling."

Here's one thing that I think is not addressed well in this video or indeed on other resources that address curation: the Explain part of her FACETS acronym. I agree that ideally the curator should explain why any particular item of the collection is included in the curation, but also I think it's important to explain how one item relates to another. I don't see how this can be done with any of the curation tools I have seen. How can the curator effectively explain to the visitor what the relationship is between different items in the collection in a way that's easy for the visitor to follow? Right now it seems to me that the curator would have to say in his/her notes, "This item is similar to the one I added to the collection back in January....take a look at...go back to..." etc. That's awkward and clumsy. Any solutions to this?

The Ideal Length for All Online Content

The Ideal Length for All Online Content | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Every so often when I’m tweeting or emailing, I’ll think: Should I really be writing so much?

I tend to get carried away. And for the times that I do, it sure would be nice to know if all this extra typing is hurting or helping my cause. I want to stand out on social media, but I want to do it in the right way.

Curious, I dug around and found some answers for the ideal lengths of tweets and titles and everything in between. Many of these could have been answered with “it depends,” but where’s the fun in that?

Solid research exists to show the value of writing, tweeting, and posting at certain lengths. We can learn a lot from scientific social media guidelines like these. Here’s the best of what I found.

With declining reach and the impending "doom" of having to pay for everything on Facebook, people have been trying to look at creative ways to salvage their work on the social networking site.

While I don't believe small business pages will be able to make their presence profitable, Kevan Lee offers some very nice ideas on the Buffer Blog. For example:

- Share behind-the-scenes content

- Engage your audience with questions

- Share self-explanatory pictures and visual content.

I really like idea #3, actually. It makes a lot of sense.

Clicking on the real: telling stories and engaging audiences through interactive documentaries. | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

"An interesting thing about contemporary media is just how much of it is factual. From journalism to social media, YouTube to reality TV we are surrounded by media that claims to be true. Often this content has a definite agenda; it wants to persuade us, make us click, join in and pass it on. How can we understand our changing relationship to factual media? And why is documentary scholarship well placed to help us do so? Kate Nash explores new interactive dimensions to documentary that may encourage wider engagement."

Fast Food for the Mind: Stories or Tweets? | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it
Through social media interactions via online venues like Facebook and Twitter, our society today is overrun in the same way with “fast food for the mind.” Just as our bodies can tolerate only so much unhealthy food, our minds equally have a certain cognitive bandwidth. But instead of spending our bandwidth on deeper thoughts, we often sacrifice it for the instant gratification and distraction of the mind offered by myriad online venues.
