The 10 Best Corporate Blogs in the World

The 10 Best Corporate Blogs in the World | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

My reaction to most company blogs: “Blah, Blah and Double Blah!”

I recently taught a class on corporate blogging at the amazing social media marketing graduate program at Rutgers University.  In my research for the class, I pored through hundreds of websites looking for examples of the best company blogs in the world.

Amid the coal pile that is the state of corporate blogging today, I did manage to find a few diamonds that don’t bore to tears with pronouncements, promotions and product announcements (the Killer P’s)....

Americans Can't Even Focus On TV Anymore

Americans Can't Even Focus On TV Anymore | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Much has been written about the distractibility of the modern American. In the past decade, diagnoses of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorders have skyrocketed, the listicle conquered the internet, and there was even a report that goldfish now have longer attention spans than the average American.

Now it appears that watching television, itself a diversion, requires more focus than we can muster.

Forbes reports that a new study from the consulting group TNS found that 56% of Americans engage in another digital activity (playing with their phones, tablets, or laptops) while they are watching TV. That puts the U.S. ahead of the global average, which is 48%, but well behind Japan, where 79% of TV viewers are using a different device while they do it...,

Integrating social media with TV offers great ROI potential for marketers.

Rein Hof's curator insight, July 11, 1:15 AM

Hong Kong: Want your bilingual kids to get ahead? Teach them a third language: computer code | SCMP.com

Hong Kong: Want your bilingual kids to get ahead? Teach them a third language: computer code | SCMP.com | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Whether or not they dazzle in final exams, students are expected to be numerate and literate, preferably at least in two languages (English and Chinese for most youngsters here). They may soon have to add a third language if they are to get ahead in the 21st century: code.

Computer programming, or machine language, code defines much of modern society. It drives all those apps which many rely on everyday to communicate, do business and navigate the world, and policy makers in developed countries have been working on ways to ensure that youngsters speak code.

In Hong Kong, some efforts have begun to instil code literacy. Ray Cheung Chak-chun, an assistant professor at the City University Apps Lab, has been running a series of workshops called "We Can Code", to teach secondary school students the ins and outs of creating mobile apps. At the same time, British entrepreneur David Greenwood started Code Club HK, a volunteer-run network to promote coding among children aged from nine to 11 at after-school activities.

That is far from adequate if Hong Kong is to realise its dreams of being a tech hub, let alone keep apace with global practices.

"I won't say Hong Kong is behind the rest of the world. But to become a leader, you need to do more than enough," says Yat Siu, founder and CEO of web-technology company Outblaze.

Dumbing down the Internet of Things with Spark OS | Colin Neagle | NetworkWorld.com

Dumbing down the Internet of Things with Spark OS | Colin Neagle | NetworkWorld.com | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

A little over a year ago, the people behind the Spark system for connecting everyday devices to the internet launched a Kickstarter campaign seeking a modest $10,000 in funding.

Today, the company announced $4.9 million in Series A funding, The Next Web reports. Maybe they’re onto something.

The funding coincides with the announcement of the Spark OS, which aims to make it easier for anyone – from seasoned network engineers and developers to hobbyists and designers – to build internet-connected devices.

The Spark Core, which has been available in beta since November and is already featured in a couple of commercial products, is a $39 board that runs Arduino code and provides connectivity to a previously disconnected device. The new cloud-based Spark operating system aims to make Core-enabled devices truly smart without becoming too expensive. Some examples, as shown in the ironic but sufficiently illustrative promotional video below, include programming lights to turn on automatically after sunset or doors to lock themselves after they've been shut.

The idea is not just to make it easier to connect the devices that people want to connect, but to make the best possible use of that connectivity. A cloud operating system, as pointed out in the above video, means this connectivity can extend beyond just the ability to control a light switch with a smartphone, and can make these newly connected devices communicate with each other in a way that makes them more useful.

Value-Based Marketing: Sources of Content Inspiration

Value-Based Marketing: Sources of Content Inspiration | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

...But what’s a business owner or a content marketer to do if they’re supposed to come up with great content, and they don’t know where to start?

Everyone knows that content is the key to turning a lead into a buyer.

Each lead reads through your content and takes away something that they find useful. If your content isn’t valuable to them, they’re less likely to pay attention to your brand and what you have to say. No amount of SEO, keyword lacing, or fancy gimmicks can replace high-quality content.

So where can you find some inspiration for your content? Here are some ideas....

5 Characteristics Of High Converting Headlines

5 Characteristics Of High Converting Headlines | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

The information you’re about to read is very powerful, but I need to offer two disclaimers.

All these techniques don’t work all the time in every situation. Nonetheless, the data does point to these characteristics as being effective most of the time.Different techniques work better for different audiences. Studies may say one thing, but your mileage may vary. You know your audience best.

The better your headline, the better your marketing.

Use these five characteristics to improve your conversion rates. Here’s what works:

  • Use numbers (odd numbers work best)
  • Use 5-9 words if people are familiar 16-18 if they’re not
  • Use negative words, or at least few positive superlatives
  • Use a two-part model
  • Be very, very clear

I chose to Scoop this article from Neil Patel since he's one of the most respected and successful online marketers I know.

The interesting thing was how the headline Neil used in this piece didn't score well when I tested it via AMI headline analyzer?

I made a minor tweak to get a score of 62% but left the original headline in tact. I only edited the image.

5 Apps for Making Movies on Mobile Devices | Monica Burns Blog | Edutopia.org | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Every year at Hollywood award shows, we see fantastic movies celebrated for their rich storytelling and dynamic performances. Your students can become moviemakers, too, thanks to some powerful apps for mobile devices. With these tools, your children can take videos and edit their work to make professional quality movies using iOS devices (iPads and iPhones) and Android tablets.

One good thing about this easy-to-use technology is that students can still use important English language arts skills like writing a narrative, planning a sequential story, and including key details when getting ready to make a movie. These apps can enhance the work that you are doing with children in the classroom and give them room to be creative storytellers.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, July 8, 9:03 AM

Simon Anholt recently delivered this TED talk and it is a doozy on several fronts.

What caught my attention when watching this is the point Simon makes about a nation's brand story -- i.e. reputation -- and its effect on economic prosperity plus being able to make a difference in the world.

If this is true for nations, it also holds true for business. Which is one reason why companies embracing doing good in the world as a fundamental way of doing business are gaining more customers in the marketplace. This is beyond simply attaching your company to a social cause.

This is a terrific talk and you will be surprised at which countries do the most good in the world. Simon indicates that these countries consciously create their story. People are attracted to that story, which they in turn tell. At least that seems to be part of the dynamic Simon talks about.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this -- or maybe not. In the end, if you wanted your country to be in the top 10, what parts of your country's story needs to change? What kind of story do you want to be a part of?

If this was a business list, what would need to happen to have your company be in the top 10? What kind of story (stories) would it need to be embodying and sharing?
