Why Sales on Social Media Will Be Huge By 2015 [INFOGRAPHIC]

Why Sales on Social Media Will Be Huge By 2015 [INFOGRAPHIC] | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Shopping on social media may not be big right now, but by 2015, it's expected to explode...

A new infographic by has found that “social commerce sales are expected to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with half of web sales to occur through social media,” writes Samantha Murphy of Mashable. Currently, one in three small businesses use Facebook, while there are over 42 million fan pages on Facebook. Seventeen percent of those sell products on the pages.

Facebook fans are 79 percent more likely than a non-fan to purchase a product, and 74 percent of fans are more likely to recommend a company or product. The social media site also drives 26 percent of referral traffic to company websites. Right now ”20 percent of shoppers prefer to purchase products via Facebook than the brand’s website”— and that number is expected to climb.

When Big Data Becomes Bad Data | Lauren Kirchner | Truthdig.com

When Big Data Becomes Bad Data | Lauren Kirchner | Truthdig.com | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

A recent ProPublica analysis of The Princeton Review’s prices for online SAT tutoring shows that customers in areas with a high density of Asian residents are often charged more. When presented with this finding, The Princeton Review called it an “incidental” result of its geographic pricing scheme. The case illustrates how even a seemingly neutral price model could potentially lead to inadvertent bias — bias that’s hard for consumers to detect and even harder to challenge or prove.

Over the past several decades, an important tool for assessing and addressing discrimination has been the “disparate impact” theory. Attorneys have used this idea to successfully challenge policies that have a discriminatory effect on certain groups of people, whether or not the entity that crafted the policy was motivated by an intent to discriminate. It’s been deployed in lawsuits involving employment decisions, housing and credit. Going forward, the question is whether the theory can be applied to bias that results from new technologies that use algorithms.

One unexpected effect of the company’s geographic approach to pricing is that Asians are almost twice as likely to be offered a higher price than non-Asians, an analysis by ProPublica shows. Read the story.

Improv is at the heart of storytelling and an essential skill to master when sharing stories in person. It's even more critical when two or more people are telling a story in tandem.

Here Kathy Klotz-Guest, improv and storytelling expert, gives us the skinny on how and why the two work together so well.

Kathy is interviewed on this podcast by story professional Lianne Picot for her Voice America radio show on business storytelling.

Social Media is a Terrible Ecommerce Tactic - or is it? | Jay Baer

Social Media is a Terrible Ecommerce Tactic - or is it? | Jay Baer | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

Is social ineffective or just invisible?

But the challenge for social media—and for word of mouth marketing—is that they are inherently additive pieces of the conversion funnel, rather than causative.

Forrester Research suggests that word of mouth is part of 80% of all purchase funnels. At least some of this word of mouth is occurring via social media, with brand or product mentions spawning searches and/or direct URL entries that are included in this data. But, because social media wasn’t the final link in the chain, it gets none of the creditfor the desirable consumer behavior it spurred....

Millennial Schmillennial | immediate future

Millennial Schmillennial | immediate future | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, if you are consuming content online hardly a day goes by without someone somewhere dropping the “M” word.

Millennial.

“How millennial are you?”; “The Millennials Are Coming”; “10 Surprising Habits of Millennial Art Collectors”; and “3 Insights To Help Your Millennial Marketing Strategy Succeed”; are typical headlines that somehow find their way into everything.

Millennials are a hot topic for good reason. The estimated buying power of Millennials is around $1.3 trillion in the US and $10 trillion globally.

In the not-too-distant future, they will become the largest generation with the greatest combined purchasing power in human history.

It’s no wonder that brands are falling all over themselves, blinded by the dollar signs in their eyes, to try and figure out this audience.

This has led to the publication of countless pieces of content that offer helpful advice and endless Dos & Don’ts lists of what to do when trying to communicate with a Millennial audience.

It is for this reason that we need to step back and consider a few facts that everyone seems to be overlooking when it comes to Millennials....

In a world where big brands talk about ROI, it's important to have this discussion with small business owners. Every time I have a new client, I remind them of the fact that they will not get real results until they actually build relationships with prospects.

I can't remember where I read that people need to see something 20 times before they decide to take action. This speaks to the need of approaching social business with a lot more care.

What a provocative piece! Yes, there's a backlash against storytelling going on. Basically, that storytelling is bad and we should avoid it. Makes me laugh.

Since we think in stories, talk in stories, and stories are the way we make meaning of the world, It's like people saying "Don't have a brain!" How silly.

So this article charts out the 9 arguments against storytelling, and offers clear, concise, brilliant rebuttals. Yay! Take these to your clients/colleagues whenever you hear one of these pop out of their mouths.

Written by Ron Ploof, as you read these arguments you will scoff and then enjoy Ron's reply. Above all, keep those stories coming! Be brave. Story is worth fighting for.

12 storytelling + brand archetypes to grow your business

12 storytelling + brand archetypes to grow your business | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it
Successful brands have a strong sense of identity, one that mirrors the hopes and aspirations of their customers. But finding your voice – especially as a small business – can be difficult. Blogger Ffion at Sparkol knocks it out of the park again by writing a post that clearly articulates/summarizes the 12 most potent archetypes to use in your storytelling and branding efforts. These are all tried and tested, and will grow your business.

Ffion's post is a summary of the masterful book "The Hero and The Outlaw: Building Extraordinary Brands Through The Power of Archetypes", written by Margaret Mark and Carol Pearson (2001). It's been a go-to book in my library since it came out.

The book gives lots of examples of companies who have used the archetypes successfully. What I love about Ffion's article is that she includes video clips of companies using the archetypes so we get the archetype really fast.

Enjoy this romp through archetypes that work. I'm sure you'll recognize the archetype(s) you are using. This post will help you leverage your archetypes more consciously and deliberately.
