Putting More Emotion In Your Storytelling: New App Toneapi Helps

Putting More Emotion In Your Storytelling: New App Toneapi Helps | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it
Toneapi is a Web-based app that analyzes (and potentially improves) the emotional impact of your writing.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, February 8, 2:32 PM

Do your stories carry enough emotion in them? Are they connecting emotionally with your audience? A lot of people struggle with this.

I ran across this app and tried it out over the weekend, thinking this would be really cool and helpful if it works! The results? Mixed.

First, it's fun and easy to play with. Take some text and copy/paste it into their program (free 15 day trial). Then analyze it for emotional content. The app will give you an score on emotional content along with some other neat maps. Then you can optimize your content to bring up your emotional score.

So far so good. I took some of my website text and could see I needed to make some improvements. I followed their suggestions and this is when it didn't work as well as I wanted it to.

For example, the words story and storytelling kept being highlighted as red, meaning they were negatively charged. Hmmmmm. Then other suggested word substitutions just flat out didn't work, probably because the app doesn't read for context, only the emotional value of a word. For example, it rated 'presentation' as neutral. Substitute words had no connection to the word presentation. Other times it worked great, though.

Bottom line, I improved my score slightly. I'm going to continue to play with this however, and see what improvements I can make with both the app and on my own.

Have fun with this one!

Jim Signorelli's insight:

This is a blog article from Visme, a very new and slick presentation tool. The article itself is a great example of content marketing, as it demonstrates without prescribing the Visme product.  Besides convincing me to look further into the product (and I am  impressed), it provides an interesting, albeit controversial take on how to go about designing a brand story.

This article is worth reading as many of the points are interesting and provocative.   You may not agree with statements  like "share your failures," and "don't be afraid to tell consumers you're having a slow year."  Frankly, I don't think one needs to open their kimono to achieve authenticity.  However, I do believe that authenticity is key.

If you're not familiar with "THE POWER OF WORDS" video, it's really worth seeing. That, and there are some  points worth pondering. I'd love to have your take on this article? I think there's something very important missing when it comes to brand storytelling or StoryBranding.  Can you tell what that is? (here's a hint:  it's why the article was provided by Visme).

Excited to see how we might be able to set this up in our GAFE space - students already have accounts, so this is a natural fit to facilitate student curation!

Konstantinos Kalemis's curator insight, August 10, 2015 4:58 AM

Google has just introduced "Collections", for Google+, a new service which allows any Google+ user to group his posts by topic and to create public, shareable collections of his favorite links, articles, videos and images.

To use Google Collections, simply go to your G+ profile page and then select "Collections" on the drop down menu appearing on the top left part of the page.

"Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections."

You can either create new posts containing whatever type of content inside a collection, or assign an existing, published post to a collection you have just created.

You can create as many collections as you like.

Google+ Collections is available on the web and on Android (iOS coming later).

My comment: Google+ Collections adds opportunity for creating additional value to G+ users by letting interests drive community engagement. This is a feature that sooner or later any social network will offer.

Free to use.

GREAT Haiku Deck by Harris (@OptimizePrime). So good its no wonder it has over 50,000 views. What makes it great is how well it understands the "we are all media companies" now riff I laid down in Red Bull Branding Lessons on Curatti (http://curatti.com/red-bulls-branding-lesson-media-companies-now/ ).

The "new seo" and "everyone is a media company" work nicely together. Great and INSIGHTFUL deck by a new trusted SEO source for me.

[Infographic] Evolving SEO tactics: longer posts, Google+ and the tilde | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

This is an infographic about current SEO thinking with tips and tools to help sites rank better on search engines.

Most people have a general idea of how to optimize their content for search engines. That search engine algorithms are proprietary and evolving inevitably causes different opinions on SEO. Of course there’s another school of thought that minimal keyword research and a green-light from a SEO plugin are enough to publish a piece.

This infographic challenges writers and some of the preconceived notions about SEO. It has a mixture of tips and tools to help you rank better in search...

Great comment MizWalidah. I wold modify one point. Instead of "continually optimizing your meta keywords and tags" I would find ways to ping in fresh content such as User Generated Content from reviews or comments. Once a website I've SEOed is inside of Google's algorithm changing meta values that matter (mostly the page's title) can HURT SEO. I change titles VERY VERY carefully since the first rule of SEO is DO NO DAMAGE. The QDF (Quality Deserves Freshness) movement post Panda and Penguin LOVES it when a page pings, so I love the 1% of visitors who are willing to comment, review or otherwise contribute User Generated Content.

I DON'T play with meta nearly as much as you imply since to do so can look SPAMMY and cause real harm. The most important idea is creating content other people want to share. This is why I love GAMES and CONTESTS especially for bands. High engagement content such as Contests and Games can help with SEO and they can help create a distinct brand all bands need. Appreciate your enthusiasm, but be careful about meta (especially title) changes. Marty

I ran across this post the other day giving the backstory and info about a new storytelling app for iOS devices. I haven't downloaded it yet onto my iPad (I have an Android phone) to check it out. I thought you should know about it anyway.

Hmmmmm -- this may be a good way to quickly capture customer "stories", tell your business stories, or record staff/vendor stories. That takes skills in evoking stories, and then story crafting, which many of you are already good at.

So go try this out and let us know if it's worthwhile!
