What a great article! And how fabulous that creating science fiction adventures with executives is leading to boosts in creativity plus discovering new products.

Now how innovative is that? It just goes to show how versatile storytelling is, and how when it is creatively applied, whole worlds open up.

Read this article by Roger Showley. It's great this is happening in my own backyard here in San Diego, CA. Not only will you enjoy this very different application of storytelling, you'll get some ideas yourself about how to use storytelling to create a future story, or help you meet future demands.

I am always on the hunt for articles that are great examples of stories in action. In this case, LinkedIn connection Karthik Rajan of GDF SUEZ wrote this piece and it really shows how stories can be used effectively to convey complex ideas simply.

Another reason I like this post is that the stories Rajan shares also have more than one idea imbedded in them, and hence contain multiple meanings. Which idea and meaning you will emphasize depends on the situation and your intention as the teller.

In addition to the points Rajan makes, what other ideas and meanings do you find embedded in the stories he shares?

How Smart Devices Can Be Disruptive without Being Intrusive

How Smart Devices Can Be Disruptive without Being Intrusive | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

The key to a gadget’s ubiquity is balancing both function and design, so the device can enhance someone’s lifestyle without requiring them to change their behavior…too much.

I was lucky enough to spend 17 years of my career at HP, mostly with the PC and printer business, at a time when we were creating new businesses and taking new ideas to market at a breakneck pace Some of the basic rules

I learned back then became extremely relevant when I joined Livescribe. Right away, we shifted our product design to embrace smartphones and tablets given the ubiquity and power of modern mobile devices....

Oh, what a great article this is! Written by Henry Doss for Fortune magazine, he has solidly made the case for the link between innovation and storytelling.

The inability to innovate drives companies into the ground. There are lots of barriers to innovation in many companies -- and it's usually a combination of mindset and outmoded systems. Storytelling won't fix the systems, but it will fix the mindset.

So how does Doss make his case? Here are a few quotes he shares:

Likewise, companies are not born to innovation, countries are not by nature innovative, and economic regions don't just become innovative by pumping resources into them.  They can only be created, or re-created, as innovative inside of an innovation narrative.

And Plato told us that “those who tell the stories rule society.”  Play with his words just a bit and you get:  “Those who tell stories of innovation create innovative societies.”

I hope these wet your appetite to gain all of the author's insights into the link between storytelling and innovation. There are several other quotes from this article I'll be citing in my work.

I am keeping this article handy so I can use it with clients. Once you read the article, you might want to do the same.

This is quite a unique article and one I'm going to refer to a lot in my work. The language used to present these ideas is very imaginative -- and they stick in my mind!

But what does it have to do with stories? Mainly this: the author Charles Day's ideas and explanations are top notch. But we are left wondering "How do I executive on these?" The answer includes storytelling.

  1. Conveying gravity happens through sharing stories about why the company exists and why anyone should care.
  2. Maintaining gravity happens when you've got storytelling imbedded in your culture/daily activities.
  3. Tension is experienced through the tension you build into the stories you share.
  4. Applying heat also happens through storytelling. Stories can go viral and ideas can rapidly come into expression.
  5. Speed is about learning more, and what better way to learn quickly than through sharing stories.

OK -- you get the picture. Enjoy this creative re-think about being a creative company and what it takes. Think of story as your go-tool process to realize more creativity in your organization.

Now here's a piece coming from the worlds of creativity and education about the necessity for storytelling -- but it is directly applicable to business.

As you read the article by Menno van DijkLaurie Kemp, whenever the words "education" or "school" are mentioned, simply substitute the word "business" and you'll get their points.

The authors discuss research from the journal of Creativity And Innovation Management. The focus of the research was how storytelling skills build creativity and innovation abilities. There's even a link to the original research article that you can download for free.

And a business's competitive edge today is in creativity and innovation, right? In fact, that's the competitive edge for the US economy in the global marketplace.

The research focuses on storytelling in schools. But if it's good for students, it's good for business.

The take away? If you are in business of any size, training in storytelling could be a key to your sustainable future. If you are a consultant or coach, adding storytelling skills to your repertoire could keep your pipeline fed (but get trained in storytelling first, please).

Storytelling, creativity, innovation -- go forth and prosper!

...Lens choices, camera angles, color palettes, editing rhythm, and more are all elements in a specific vocabulary created to best express the story.

Here’s the insight for color: instead of trying to map colors back to cultural associations (which are not fixed across all cultures, but change with every micro-culture), it’s better to assign meaning to each color and stick with it.

This trick works perfectly as long as you never break your own rules, unless, of course, the shock itself creates a greater truth....

I've been traveling and working (the kind where you fall exhausted into bed early) but am finally back home and curating. While on the road I've been gathering a nice collection of articles to share with you this week.

This first one comes from Karthik Rajan, Regional VP, Sales at GDF SUEZ in Texas. It's a wonderful article about how bedtime stories with his daughter turned into keen insights into creativity and leadership -- like assumed constraints -- which are business lessons for us all. I really like how Rajan weaves together storytelling in personal and professional life -- because that is how life actually happens!

This is a well-written post and one I know you will enjoy. It's perfect for the beginning of the week.

Here's another great article (with a few twists) about the value of  working in proximity to others, and face-to-face interactions -- and the positive impact on both business productivity and profitability.

It's easy to get caught up in technology and working virtually. Yet what we know from studies done since 1977 is that face-to-face communication remains critically important in organizations.

And of course, when you are actually working with people in the same physical environment, conversations and sharing stories happen all the time.

As this article says, physical closeness even boosts virtual communication. Who knew??!!

This latest study was done with wearables over the past 2 years. Lots of big data was collected. Not only did the research confirm that face-to-face communication increased productivity, they also discovered it increased innovation.

Even better, they were able to actually chart how the physical environment (layout and design) of the office spaces either fostered communication, story sharing, and knowledge transfer -- or not.

Read the article for much more in-depth information about the implications of this study on the design of work spaces and the positive impacts for companies. It's a winner!

6 Steps: How Leaders Can Tell a Great Story

6 Steps: How Leaders Can Tell a Great Story | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it
It’s a skill every leader needs to master.

"We tell stories to our coworkers and peers all the time — to persuade someone to support our project, to explain to an employee how he might improve, or to inspire a team that is facing challenges. It’s an essential skill, but what makes a compelling story in a business context? And how can you improve your ability to tell stories that persuade?"

And I really like the 2 case studies shared. Not only are they written as as stories (an uncommon experience), they are terrific examples of 2 ways stories have been used by leaders and the results that occurred.

It's all about how a couple of crazy guys bought the last Polaroid film factory so that 300 million cameras around the globe could still be used.

Now how different is that?! And they succeeded, and are successful. It's a terrific little story.

Other than for your own inspiration, how could you use this story? How about when talking with teams about thinking outside the box. Or when working with executives about hidden market opportunities. Or anytime you are dealing with the principles of creativity and innovation. Just a few ideas :)
