Why Google+ has to shrink to grow

"One day in 2013, I received an email from Google informing me that YouTube was preparing to fix its notoriously bad comment section. The proposed savior was Google+, then a little over 2 years old. By harnessing people’s real identities and reputations, the thinking went, the most toxic and spammy of commenters would sink to the bottom, and the cream of the comments would rise to the top."

All I could think of while reading this article was: "Finally an intelligent conversation on Google+!"

To many the Plus is a failed experiment because Google tried to compete with Facebook. But to me, it has never been about that. The platform is not a failure. It's just the perfect example of a business that pays attention to what its community and customers say.

I have always felt that Google listens to users. And as Casey Newton mentions in this post, Google+ is now finally small enough to build on. It’s focused, self-contained, and at least by Google terms, not overly ambitious."

Google plus is one of the most unknown, under-utilized internet marketing tools available on the internet right now. It contains magical powers, like the ability to get your face to appear next to your search result listings in Google Search and the opportunity to network with thousands of like-minded individuals.   Many whisper that Google Plus holds the secret to future Google Search organic rankings.   At the very minimum, Google Plus is a vibrant community full of engaged users that are ready to become a part of your online audience.  It also has so much potential to become intertwined with every aspect of Google’s multiple prominent platforms.

SMToolbox: Expert Google Plus Tips and Tools | Social Media Today | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

As Google+ has over 300m active users (and growing), I am always keen to learn how I can use the platform more effectively. This week, I was very lucky to catch up with Google+ guru Martin Shervington in a Hangout before his talk at Social Media Marketing World. The downside of a Google Hangout was that I could see he was on the sunny West Coast of the US while I was sitting in the dark in London, but on the positive side I learned a huge amount about how to maximise my use of Google+. Martin also shared his advice for people new to the platform.

Suddenly, Google Plus Is Outpacing Twitter To Become The World's Second Largest Social Network

Suddenly, Google Plus Is Outpacing Twitter To Become The World's Second Largest Social Network | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

When Google launched its social networking service, Google Plus, during the summer of 2011, tens of millions of people clamoured to sign up for an account. But within months, critics had panned the new service, pointing to user pages bereft of meaningful content and exchanges. They said the new social site just wasn't, well, social. It seemed as though Facebook had cornered the market -- Google was too late to the party.

Perhaps not.

According to data released this week by Internet analytics firm GlobalWebIndex, Google Plus is racking up large numbers of new users and continues to outpace Twitter as the world's number two social network, behind perennial titan Facebook. The reasons behind Google Plus's growth -- it now can boast 359 million active users, up 33 percent from 269 million users at the end of June 2012, according to GlobalWebIndex -- are complex and tied to Google's effort to build a connecting layer across all its services, including search, YouTube, maps and other products. Log into one, and you've logged into the lot....

MTD's curator insight, May 2, 2013 7:57 AM

Google Plus is beginning to overtake Twitter. Why? Well, they're horses for courses. For micro-communications and riffing, there's no question that Twitter fits the behaviour of people perfectly. But for focus, more intimate sharing, discussion and depth - real socialisation, rather than intermittent chatting - Google Plus is far more effective.

The real question is: what kind of conversation is more rewarding - and what do people and businesses respond to in the form of brand identification, purchasing and loyalty?

There is room for both. We need both short-term and longer-term communications and understanding. As to which is more useful? As with any argument the best idea is that they reinforce each other.

Jeff Domansky's comment, May 2, 2013 1:00 PM
Hi Min,there's no question that Google+ is growing but it's important to pick the best channel for business and personal use. We should never feel we have to be everywhere when it comes to social media. Appreciated your comment.
Jeff Domansky's comment, May 2, 2013 1:01 PM
MTD, I'm with you on the synergy between social media channels. Integration always works well as long as you choose the right channels for the right strategy. Great comment, thanks.

Like it or not, Google+, is here to stay. Even if you've roundly ignored the plaform in your personal social media life, you can't afford to do the same with your company. Cultivating an active, well-trafficked page takes time and effort, but the advantages it brings are well worth the investment.

How to Effectively Incorporate Google+ Into Your Brand’s Content Strategy - Business 2 Community

How to Effectively Incorporate Google+ Into Your Brand’s Content Strategy - Business 2 Community | Digital Brand Marketing | Scoop.it

When Google launched Google+ in June 2011, it was all the internet was talking about.

But just two months later, traffic to Google+ dropped and its merits as the next big social platform were hotly contested.

While the Google guys came up with several ways to incorporate neat features, they completely forgot about presentation and user experience. Sure, they had over 400 million registered users, but only a quarter of those registered users are active.

Last year, the integration of Google Plus with YouTube (forcing YouTube users to have a Google Plus account) artificially added hundreds of millions of supposed users, who actually spend little or no time using the platform.

More recently, Google Plus passed 1 billion registered users and counting, but 23% of marketers won’t even consider Google+. It’s still a mystery for many businesses.

What are the real benefits of having a presence on Google+? And how does that impact your content strategy?
