Calas Galadhon re-opens in Second Life

Calas Galadhon re-opens in Second Life | Tech Link Library | Scoop.it

Monday, February 1st marks the official re-opening of Calas Galadhon Park after the New Year’s break

For those unfamiliar with Calas Galadhon, it is one of the largest, longest-running privately held parks in Second Life, open to everyone to enjoy and offering a marvellous range of attractions and events throughout the year. The park is completely non-residential, and supported entirely by donations and out of Ty and Truck’s own pockets. And it is, in a word, beautiful.- and you can find out more through the park’s website.

Here's One More Reason To Play Video Games: Beating Dyslexia

Here's One More Reason To Play Video Games: Beating Dyslexia | Tech Link Library | Scoop.it

Most parents prefer that their children pick up a book rather than a game controller. But for kids with dyslexia, action video games may be just what the doctor ordered.

I have noticed that many of the Dyslexia students on our campus are more of strategic gamers than most other students. I think I will consider more console options in the classroom. Their attention to detail in some games are phenomenal.

This is so, so true. Most stuff I read is like people are trying to look too smart, or like they are an expert on the subject. I have found that  it's ten times the work to write short, concise, meaningful and relevant content. Most seem to to just blurt something on "paper" that looks good without reading again later and improve to see if it makes sense, and it's easy to read. I read a TON of online posts and I would say the 50%+ fall short.

8 Online Games for Inspiring Students

8 Online Games for Inspiring Students | Tech Link Library | Scoop.it

For many teachers, online games are the scourge of the classroom – a drain on students’ attention, time and potential. Any educator who has ever tried to teach a lesson using online resources or taken a class in the computer lab has probably experienced the frustration of finding a student on a gaming site instead of sticking to the intended lesson plan. But online games don’t always have to be a distraction

Some great games including Immune System Defender and Climate Challenge, where students learn about policy making as well as climate change and the environment.

Fascinating and useful developments, but this is worth looking at for the Dynavox Eyemax alone.  The ability to successfully communicate must lift a great burden off those unable to articulate or gesture their needs.

robyns tut's curator insight, September 14, 2013 10:54 AM

This shows hoe growing technology increases to help people with and without disabilities. Compared to Rhodes that has limited access and help for the dissabled, these inventions offer great support overcoming these obstacles. A story can be done on why these objects are not made readily available to more disabled people.

How video gaming can be beneficial for the brain

How video gaming can be beneficial for the brain | Tech Link Library | Scoop.it

Video gaming causes increases in the brain regions responsible for spatial orientation, memory formation and strategic planning as well as fine motor skills. This has been shown in a new study conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Charité University Medicine St. Hedwig-Krankenhaus. The positive effects of video gaming may also prove relevant in therapeutic interventions targeting psychiatric disorders.

Natalia Zhukova's curator insight, November 24, 2013 3:49 AM

I used to think video gaming could only destroy your sense of reality, develop isolation from society, alienation, even depersonalization and loss of identity in which the real self is replaced by virtual, emotions are inhibited and finally you end up with psychiatric disorders. This article changes my approach.

Alex Simon's curator insight, December 8, 2013 4:41 PM

i totally agree with this article. i think its really cool someone researched this and found this cool information.

Ella Cooper's curator insight, May 1, 2014 8:11 AM

Thought provoking study that has found a casual link between video gaming and volumetric brain increase. The possibilities for advancements in video gaming therapy for brain disorders could be close with future research.
