Once employers start seeing qualified candidates with alternative educational backgrounds, the ability of the four-year colleges to hold students hostage to increasingly worthless degrees will gradually weaken. Then, the traditional academic institutions can choose to evolve or perish.

A community effort is making badges practical in one city this summer

This summer, as schools let out, thousands of Pittsburgh students streamed into digital media programs, drop-in maker spaces, and paid internships across the city. As they shuffle back to school, or even enter into the workforce, many will be adding shiny new digital badges to their online portfolios as a record of their hard work.

The opportunity comes courtesy of Pittsburgh City of Learning, which is working with major community partners to provide more than a hundred different, mostly free, summer programs to about 5,000 learners. And digital badges play a big part.

WHERE DO WE MOOC FROM HERE ..? | Digital Badges and Alternate Credentialling in Higher Education | Scoop.it
In the event that the MOOC endeavours were to collapse or spectacularly crash and fade into oblivion, the underlying idealogy, design and output of the pseudo-MOOCs will prevail in the form of online learning the plethora of new innovations and added services that are developed in the process.

Succinctly, cMOOCs focus on knowledge creation and generation whereas xMOOCs focus on knowledge duplication. In order for the MOOC, in its original form, to be transformative, the education system must in tandem revolutionize until there is a parallel system of free or low-fee credentials, not controlled by traditional colleges, that leads to jobs. Alas, their true impact won’t be felt until students and learners of all kinds have access to digital credentials that are also built for the modern world.

Employer Perceptions of Critical Information Literacy Skills and Digital Badges

Employer Perceptions of Critical Information Literacy Skills and Digital Badges | Digital Badges and Alternate Credentialling in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Digital badges are an educational innovation used to measure learning of specific skills, such as information literacy. However, few studies have quantitatively surveyed employers for their perceptions about information literacy skills or digital badges. An online survey was developed and sent to employers to gauge perceptions of information literacy skills of college graduates and the use of the innovation of digital badges to represent competencies that students have accumulated. The results of the survey showed that: information literacy and metaliteracy skills are valued in the workplace, employers would like more detailed representations of student skills, and that digital badges are a possible way to showcase student achievement.

Free for 24 hours. A group of universities in the Washington area are betting that the certifications will help convince employers that students are picking up essential skills.

Employers say they are sick of encountering new college graduates who lack job skills. And colleges are sick of hearing that their young alumni aren’t employable.

Could a new experiment to design employer-approved "badges" leave everyone a little less frustrated?

Employers and a diverse set of more than a half-dozen universities in the Washington area are about to find out, through a project that they hope will become a national model for workplace badges.

George Washington University, Southern Illinois University and Workcred, a nonprofit affiliate of the American National Standards Institute, are teaming up to build a "credential registry" that would increase the transparency and value of industry credentials and degrees. The registry "will allow users to easily compare the quality and value of workforce credentials, such as college degrees and industry certifications, using a Web-based system with information provided directly by the institutions issuing the credentials," according to a press release. The work recently received a $2.25 million grant from the Lumina Foundation.

The complex world of digital badging is at a turning point. The experimentation of the last decade and frameworks emerging around competencies are starting to show us pathways – both what is and what could be. Below are ten insights we want to share with the larger community as we attempt to merge employer and student design criteria. All of them come from our primary research and design sessions with various stakeholders. Hats off to the many learning institutions and entrepreneurs who have embraced this challenge. The strong relationship between education and personal achievement is a basic tenet of our society, as well as an often-examined topic of social science research. Much of this research relies on traditional measures of educational attainment based on academic degrees, including high school diplomas, associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and advanced degrees. However, in recent years, attention has been called to the variety of educational credentials other than academic degrees that have labor market value. Policy makers and researchers have begun to consider the role of these “alternative educational credentials” in job placement, earnings, and career advancement.

How can an educator, librarian, or maker create a do-it-yourself badge system? What resources are out there for people who want to build a small-scale badge system?

During this fifth week of June, we encourage you to watch a webinar on DIY badging from the CLTV archives. Badging was a major theme in the Cities of Learning series this month, and this webinar, which features Carla Casilli (Mozilla), Tara Tiger Brown (LA Maker Space), Kerrie Lemoie (Codery), and Lucas Blair (Little Bird Games), highlights the ease with which small-scale badging systems can be put in place. Tune in at 4:00 pm PT on Tuesday the 30th to join in the real time Twitter conversation on this webinar using the  #connectedlearning hashtag.

Welcome to Cities of Learning!

Welcome to Cities of Learning! | Digital Badges and Alternate Credentialling in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Cities of Learning issue digital badges to showcase participation and accomplishments. Like a letter grade in school, digital badges signify mastery of a skill. Badges store in-depth layers of information – including curriculum, examples of work, and peer assessments – creating a complete portrait of the learner.

Badges also unlock deeper learning experiences by connecting young people to related interests, and are easily shared with teachers, friends, and family via an online portfolio. Some colleges and employers are beginning to embrace digital badges as evidence of knowledge and skills which could help youth access internships, jobs, and school credit in the future.

#OpenBadges for Holographic Identities | Digital Badges and Alternate Credentialling in Higher Education | Scoop.it
What is the definition of identity? There is the self-identity as narrative (Giddens), the identity-through-others (Ronald D. Laing). For Gilbert Simondon it is the result of the process of individuation, while for Edgar Morin our identity is holographic: Moreover, in human beings as in other living creatures, the whole is present within the parts; every […]
