The Dreamlands. H.P. Lovecraft based LARP will go live in Mojave Desert June 21-23. Will you be there?? | Digital Archeology | Scoop.it

The Dreamlands is a weekend camper fantasy larp based on the fantastical tales of H.P. Lovecraft. It will occur during the summer solstice of 2013 on privately owned land near the Mojave Desert. There will be a heavy emphasis on role-playing, immersion, and player agency. A call-less combat system will be utilized that makes fighting, which should be rare, involved, tiring, and deadly. The event will have very few numbers (no levels, no build points, no XP, etc.) and the only math should involve bargaining and trade.

If this first chapter is successful, a Dreamlands larp may repeat once a year. This particular event is for people ages 18 and older only.

SYNOPSIS

Documents are forthcoming, but here is the very brief explanation:

The Dreamlands is a one-shot weekend camping larp based on the works of author H.P. Lovecraft and others. It is being run by Aaron Vanek, a veteran larper and co-founder of Live Game Labs....

Exciting! NFB's World Doc Project: multi-platform global hub for docs & iDocs. Yes, Canada is the place to be! [Video Trailer]

From the NFB press release:

"Tom Perlmutter, the head of the NFB, announced that we will be driving an initiative to launch a new international multi-platform destination for viewing and engaging with the world’s best documentaries. The service will be on a subscription basis, and will include new forms of interactive documentary and will feature content that is curated, bilingual and eventually multilingual. It will launch in 2014 with an initial rollout in North America and Europe.

Audiences for documentary festivals like Hot Docs and IDFA are growing. People are increasingly searching to deepen their understanding of the world around them, and documentaries help them do that. There is currently only a very limited existing service that provides documentary audiences with a focused, coherent way of accessing the great work that is being produced worldwide. This new NFB service will do exactly that.

As Tom Perlmutter notes -

As one of the most important world centres for documentary, we have a responsibility to audiences here and around the world, and to the documentary community, to respond to those needs....

Gary Hayes's curator insight, May 6, 8:16 AM

Quote "It doesn’t exist, and it probably won’t. Augmented Reality is a horizontal technology, which means that the nigh-limitless applications make it a challenging endeavor to develop the Evernote-YouTube-Wordpress-Instagram of Augmented Reality. We did however see the AR Angry Birds, and even if it isn’t official it’s still a pretty clear indication that a successful AR game could lead the way for massive adoption. There are already some good examples out there, like the new JengAR game that inserts the 3-D content into the environment itself rather than needing a printed image."

Wait A Minute Makers: Before Agencies Can "Make Things” They Need To Create “Makeable Ideas”

Wait A Minute Makers: Before Agencies Can "Make Things” They Need To Create “Makeable Ideas” | Digital Archeology | Scoop.it

It’s an ever-increasing refrain--agencies need to make things....

Here are five steps agencies need to take to start creating “makeable ideas” that will lead to “makeable things":

1. MAKE THE CREATIVE PROCESS OPEN-SOURCE

From traditional creatives to coders, UX designers to fashion designers, bring in people with different skills sets. You’re ideating for a different solution, you need different inputs.

2. THINK PLATFORMS, NOT CAMPAIGNS

It’s not about a 30-second spot or banner ad. It’s about ideas that can evolve and support a multitude of additional ideas.

3. UNDERSTAND APIS

Can your idea connect to the Internet? If not, it’s probably not a viable platform for the 21st century....

Quote "Processing this data is one thing. Interpreting its impact on your strategy for programming, marketing, and engagement is up to you. What’s clear is that what we think about social media, entertainment, and influence and how consumers are behaving can only teach us about how to be more engaging, entertaining, and how to create and steer experiences that matter to consumers and producers. So what’s your second and third screen experience? Have you defined it? If not, this is the time to develop an engaging multi-screen experience because it’s already happening with or without your design.

How to find an audience for your indie film

How to find an audience for your indie film | Digital Archeology | Scoop.it

Frank Rose:  "It's never been easy to market an indie film—but in a blockbuster universe, getting people to care about a low-budget production devoid of stars and lacking the enormous, built-in fan base of The Dark Knight or The Hunger Games can seem all but impossible."

Via The Digital Rocking Chair
Binary Racoon's insight:

Thank you Mr Rose

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, May 24, 4:36 AM

Frank says: "Your community are those people who want your film to succeed as much as you do, and are willing to do anything and everything they can do to help it get there. They are the people who are willing to spend their Saturday afternoon putting up posters for you in their local towns. They are the ones who can’t wait to meet others who share a similar passion for your project. The real value of community is that these are the people who will tell ten others to go see your movie. And there’s nothing more powerful (and inexpensive) than leveraging the passion of your community."

CFP: Intensities SI - Transmedia Relationships Between Film/Television and Board Games | Digital Archeology | Scoop.it
Intensities Journal, Special Issue
Proposals to be received no later than 10 June 2013

"The term ‘transmedia storytelling’ has become a common one in media and cultural studies in recent years. Described by Henry Jenkins as stories told across multiple media, transmedia storytelling is not just an adaptation from one medium to another. Rather,

In the ideal form of TS, each medium does what it does best — so that a story might be introduced in a film, expanded through television, novels, and comics, and its world might be explored and experienced through game play. Each franchise entry needs to be self-contained enough to enable autonomous consumption. That is, you don't need to have seen the film to enjoy the game and vice-versa. (Jenkins, 2003: online)

Video-games are among the media most frequently cited in discussions of transmedia storytelling, and academic analysis of video-games is many and varied. In this special issue, however, we turn our analysis to board games, and ask how they can be examined through the model of transmedia storytelling; what processes of adaptation are at work in turning a board game into a film or vice versa; and how do these adaptations or transmedia stories affect the ways in which the different texts are read and understood..."

The following post was commissioned the International Association of Business Communications ( IAB...

The more the audience can participate in your storyworld, the greater their emotional connection.

By now you’ve heard the buzz about transmedia storytelling, right? Stories that reach fans across multiple delivery platforms, like those created by the big entertainment franchises (Star Wars, Batman, Glee, American Idol, Halo, Harry Potter and more).

Or the big consumer brands, whose inventive story-centric experiences have deepened customer engagement (like Coca-Cola, Audi, Old Spice, Mattel, Wrigley and Levi’s).

Or a new class of independent experience designers who are pioneering this art form with more imagination than money. They are tapping into the power of new digital platforms, devices and social media.

All of which is leading many marketers to believe that transmedia storytelling is the future of brand building and consumer engagement. By using these new techniques, marketers expand their brand campaigns across various media, reach new audiences, deepen engagement, and delight in the story and its messages....

As the re-inventor of classic sci-fi and thriller genres, as in Heroes, Conspiracy For Good, Touch and Daybreak, Tim Kring continues to evolve new ways to reach an audience. The next generation of storytelling will be less about TV, and more about reaching audiences on multiple platforms.
New narratives will be both linear and nonlinear and driven from episodic storylines melding with interactive conversations on social and mobile media. The new model will likely combine a wealth of public discourse, a bevy of interactive content and a truly connected game experience at the core.

"Any phrase that said: I’m doing things that don’t fit into a neat little box. It’s not exactly a television show or movie or video game. It’s not a book or a comic. It’s not any of those things but it might be some of those things.

It might be highly interactive and social or maybe it’s not. It may be a standalone story or vast storyworld made up of a dozen individual stories. It may be told live or produced well in advance. It may be any number of things. But the one thing it is, for sure, is something that doesn’t fit in a box...call it whatever you want, maybe they’ll use “Transmedia” or maybe they’ll call it “Interactive” or “Multi Platform” or, please oh please “Crazy Shit”. I would so love to apply for a “Crazy Shit” grant!"

Creating truly cross-media experiences isn’t easy. It takes considerably more resources and a collective team that can explore new ideas but also agree and execute upon a single vision.

That could be a difficult transition, given the traditional leadership and ‘final say’ that has been enjoyed by directors in the media industry for many decades.

“The experiments in cross-media content will only increase as technology continues to develop.”

Scheduling could also be problematic. The time needed to write a books, develop a video game and shoot a TV show varies; George R.R Martin takes a number of years to write each instalment in the Game of Thrones series, for example, which would be tricky to coincide with an annual TV season.
