From Passive Viewing to Active Learning: Simple Techniques for Applying Active Learning Strategies to Online Course Videos

From Passive Viewing to Active Learning: Simple Techniques for Applying Active Learning Strategies to Online Course Videos | 3C Media Solutions | Scoop.it
From Web-enhanced face-to-face courses to MOOCs, flipped, blended, and fully online courses, videos are an integral component of today’s educational landscape—from kindergarten all the way through higher education.
Blaine Morrow's insight:

" Videos are great for presenting visual information and emotional appeals, but not particularly effective at diving below the surface of non-visual theoretical or abstract topics or for driving critical thinking. What’s more, any video presented in class must compete for attention and memory with the five-plus hours the typical student spends outside of class watching television programs, movies, and other onscreen entertainment. (Nielsen, 2013)"

Lecture Capture, Streaming and Media Archiving in Education | c2meworld.com

Lecture Capture, Streaming and Media Archiving in Education | c2meworld.com | 3C Media Solutions | Scoop.it
Inspired by the NAB Show and produced by NewBay Media, Connect2Me delivers news and insight regarding all areas of digital media and entertainment.
Blaine Morrow's insight:

Lecture capture technology has generally been adopted more by further education establishments, including training hospitals, than by high schools—and rarely, if ever, by K-12 schools. “It’s a totally different way of learning,” said Rob Sheeley, president and CEO of Vaddio, regarding the slow uptake by K-12. That teaching paradigm typically involves a real-time, in-person relationship between the teacher and the class. “The challenge is that in K-12 you need to have students who are responsible enough and accountable enough to be able to have remote education and actually be there doing it,” he said.

Testing the Effectiveness of Lecture Capture Technology Using Prior GPA as a Performance Indicator

Testing the Effectiveness of Lecture Capture Technology Using Prior GPA as a Performance Indicator | 3C Media Solutions | Scoop.it
Interesting study on the effectiveness of lecture capture, made more useful than most through careful controls; not only is the experiment well-controlled, with classes being randomly assigned to a lecture-capture/no lecture-capture condition, but...
Blaine Morrow's insight:

"Outcome is the not-surprising finding that although students perceived the lecture capture increased their performance, it produced no class-wide statistically significant differences. In the computer science course studied this was the end of the story. In the economics class studied, however, the story gets worse:  the one finding that did show significance at the 5% level was that lower-GPA students do *worse* in the lecture capture condition (ruh roh). Authors hypothesize that presence of lecture capture may have led to class-cutting among lower-GPA students; I’d add the observation that this looks related to the “Google Effect” on memory (see Sparrow, Liu, & Wegner 2011), whereby students are significantly more likely to remember information that they believe will not be available to them later. "

Flipped classroom transforms traditional teaching

Flipped classroom transforms traditional teaching | 3C Media Solutions | Scoop.it
In teacher Rob Lamb's chemistry class, students are embracing a new classroom concept being used this school year in a few classes at Pattonville High School.
Blaine Morrow's insight:

"Lamb estimates the videos have gained him 90 more minutes per week in class to help students. He's engaged as a senior researcher in a National Science Foundation cyberlearning grant program being conducted with St. Louis University, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the University of Colorado on using informational graphics in the classroom. The extra time in class even helps him engage his students in that project."

University lectures are a legacy of our pre-digital past

University lectures are a legacy of our pre-digital past | 3C Media Solutions | Scoop.it
University lectures are a legacy of our pre-digital past. Why persist with them when technology provides better tools?
See it on Scoop.it, via Flipping learning in Higher Education

Via Peter Mellow
Blaine Morrow's insight:

"Today's standard lecture, as a knowledge delivery model, is a legacy of our pre-digital past. We already have decades of research behind us which says that, as far as learning goes, having one person stand up in front of lots of people and talking non-stop is about as ineffective as it gets."

ELearning Management: Effective Video Lectures

ELearning Management: Effective Video Lectures | 3C Media Solutions | Scoop.it
'The most important component of an online course has to be the video lectures. A sophisticated learning management system (LMS) will incorporate video lectures into course modules so that it can easily be viewed and downloaded to keep.
Blaine Morrow's insight:

"Just because a lecture is being featured, does not mean that the video should not be visually stimulating. The perks of video animation, captions, cut away shots and so forth, should be employed to keep the video visually interesting. This needs to be done in a professional and relatively formal manner."

On 'Viral" Education Videos

On 'Viral" Education Videos | 3C Media Solutions | Scoop.it
Blaine Morrow's insight:

"It takes a lot of clicking effort for a video to rise above “the noise” of other online content and become so meme-ishly popular and widely shared. According to the latest statistics, some 72 hours of video are upload to YouTube every minute. Most — obviously — do not “go viral.” Those that do — like certain TED videos — tend to have major media promotion. It isn't simply that they "strike a chord." Viral videos have often been designed at the outset to be “worth spreading” and are spread in turn by those who have (financial, political — vested) interests in promoting the message."
