In-Potentia

In-Potentia | DigitAG& journal | Scoop.it
Alessio Erioli's curator insight, Today, 5:36 AM

"In potēntia by Guy Ben-Ary and Kirsten Hudson (In collaboration with Mark Lawson and Dr Stuart Hodgetts), is a liminal, boundary creature of animate and inanimate matter that visually problematises the shifting cultural, ethical and political forces that govern and determine understandings of life, death and personhood. Informed by the aesthetics of steam punk, retro-futurism and eighteenth century scientific paraphernalia, in potēntia is a speculative techno-scientific experiment that uses a stem cell reprogramming technique called induced pluripotent stem cell technology (iPS) to reverse engineer foreskin cells purchased from an online catalogue into embryonic (like) stem cells, which Ben-Ary and Hudson then transform into neurons. What results is a real functioning neural network or “biological brain” encased within a purpose built sculptural incubator, containing a DIY bio-reactor (or life-support system) as well as a custom-made electrophysiological recording setup that converts neural activity into an unsettling soundscape."

Collective Intelligence vs. The Wisdom of Crowds

Collective Intelligence vs. The Wisdom of Crowds | DigitAG& journal | Scoop.it

David Edery, who was until recently part of the CMS staff and now works for Microsoft, has been generating some interesting discussion over on his blog, Game Tycoon, about how games might harness “the wisdom of crowds” to solve real world problems. It’s an idea he’s been promoting for some time but I only recently had a chance to read through all of his discussion. He starts by describing the growing academic interest that has been generated by James Surowiecki’s The Wisdom of Crowds and then suggesting some of the challenges of applying these concepts in a real world context:

The Smarter Objects system explores a new method for interaction with everyday objects. The system associates a virtual object with every physical object to support an easy means of modifying the interface and the behavior of that physical object as well as its interactions with other "smarter objects". As a user points a smart phone or tablet at a physical object, an augmented reality (AR) application recognizes the object and offers an intuitive graphical interface to program the object's behavior and interactions with other objects. Once reprogrammed, the Smarter Object can then be operated with a simple tangible interface (such as knobs, buttons, etc). As such Smarter Objects combine the adaptability of digital objects with the simple tangible interface of a physical object. We have implemented several Smarter Objects and usage scenarios demonstrating the potential of this approach.

Maquete Eletrônica's curator insight, May 13, 9:01 AM

Nano Supermarket - Macro Visionary

Andrea Graziano's insight:

'You analyze and connect things you see into a coherent picture, which gives you a birds-eye perspective on societal trends and global change. As a Macro visionary, you are rather skilled at predicting the future, because you are always one step ahead of the rest with your ability to see the present in terms of what it will become or can become. Along with your insight come an extravert personality, a high social-connectedness, and a strong sense of duty. Overall, these traits make you a visionary person; a modern day philosopher who inspires others and motivates them to undertake action. You are a leader because other people want to follow you, not because you force them to. As a Macro visionary, you had probably already heard about nanotechnology before taking this test. Because of its expected impact on society, you find it important to learn more about nanotechnology and share your knowledge with others. You are also quite likely to actually buy some of these products because you are a dreamer that wants to see dreams come true. Macro visionary, take care that you do not fly too high; your vision is as good as any until you have proven its usefulness and practicality.'

Mataerial

Mataerial | DigitAG& journal | Scoop.it

MATAERIAL – a brand new method of additive manufacturing. This patent-pending method allows for creating 3D objects on any given working surface independently of its inclination and smoothness, and without a need of additional support structures. Conventional methods of additive manufacturing have been affected both by gravity and printing environment: creation of 3D objects on irregular, or non-horizontal surfaces has so far been treated as impossible . By using innovative extrusion technology we are now able to neutralize the effect of gravity during the course of the printing process. This method gives us a flexibility to create truly natural objects by making 3D curves instead of 2D layers. Unlike 2D layers that are ignorant to the structure of the object, the 3D curves can follow exact stress lines of a custom shape. Finally, our new out of the box printing method can help manufacture structures of almost any size and shape.
