Teaching With QR Codes

Teaching With QR Codes | EdTech Evolution - Mapping the Intersection of tech, innovation, and instruction | Scoop.it

"So, what are QR Codes, you ask?  Well, you know what barcodes are,  like when you buy something at the store and the clerk scans a code to enter the item and amount into the till?  The QR (Quick Response) Code is kind of like that, except that it offers much more information.  Quite often the QR Code will give you a link to a website, or a text message, image, etc.  To read the QR Code, you need to install a QR Code Reader onto your device.  There are many available for free.  I like using i-nigma, seen below. Simply open the app, point it at a QR Code and your device will do the rest.  Try it with the code above.  It should take you back to this blog."

Understanding Three Key Classroom Management Theories

Understanding Three Key Classroom Management Theories | EdTech Evolution - Mapping the Intersection of tech, innovation, and instruction | Scoop.it
By Tricia Hussung How teachers manage their classrooms is an important part of achieving an effective learning environment. Educators know that all students learn differently, and choosing the right instructional style can mitigate behavioral issues and make good instruction possible. According to the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality, a significant body of research also demonstrates that classroom organization and the ability to effectively manage student behavior “significantly influence the persistence of new teachers in teaching careers.” Within this context, it is clear that instructional theory and classroom management strategies are among the most important aspects of teacher education. I have used Quia to create games to help my students learn the elements and principles of design and other art facts with my high school art classes. The games provided a safe place for them to test themselves on what they have learned. They excitedly shared their scores with their peers and took part in friendly competition. I was delighted that my entire class worked until they got 100%! Needless to say by the time they took their final exam, they were READY!

If this is true in US, then how much more so on a global scale?

Elaine J Roberts, Ph.D.'s curator insight, September 20, 8:33 AM

I talked to a brand new teacher recently who wondered why she'd bothered to go to college since her education program prepared her for very little of what actually happens in her school, a Title 1 school. She has little to no familiarity with technology or even where to go to find resources to figure out what's best to use when. When she does try to research something, she is overwhelmed by the options. She is not alone. A tech coach can help provided the tech coach isn't split between numerous buildings and provided the tech coach has time and opportunity to research other options and knows how to ask teachers questions about what they need and want, especially since most teachers don't know what they don't know. It's a conundrum not easily solved by working with an edtech consultant, though that is a solution. You can find me on Twitter @elainej or check out my web site: http://www.p20partners.com. I can help.

For some older people, just downloading an app or successfully navigating certain websites might seem like cause for quiet celebration.

But not Shirley M. McKerrow, a retired business owner and politician from Darwin, Australia.

Ms. McKerrow, who is 84, revels in the thought of learning to develop those same apps and websites. Last year, she began taking free online coding lessons through Codecademy, an interactive platform that teaches programming languages, and was tutored along the way by her tech-savvy grandson.

She could hardly contain her enthusiasm: “I might use my newfound skills to create personalized, all-singing-and-dancing online birthday cards — in fact, all sorts of greeting cards for my family and friends. Maybe I could even graduate to making greeting cards personalized for businesses or for members of Parliament to send to their constituents.

“I have all sorts of ideas,” she continued, “but need to progress my skills a little further before I get too carried away.”

While millennials make up the bulk of those learning in-demand skills like web design, programming or digital marketing — the average age of students at coding boot camps, for instance, is just under 30 — some people old enough to be their parents or even grandparents are also acquiring these abilities.

5 Questions Teachers Wish You Would Ask Them About Screen Time, Tech, and Internet Privacy

5 Questions Teachers Wish You Would Ask Them About Screen Time, Tech, and Internet Privacy | EdTech Evolution - Mapping the Intersection of tech, innovation, and instruction | Scoop.it

"No TV until your homework is finished" used to be the easiest way to separate school work from screen time. Today, with IMs, YouTube, texting, and social media, that boundary is super blurry. And because middle and high schoolers often have media and technology as part of their lessons and take-home assignments, it's tough for parents to know where to draw the line. Fortunately, the folks whose job it is to prepare kids to take on the world (including the digital one) know all about managing screen time, multitasking, online privacy, and even using tech tools at home. And they know your tweens and teens pretty well, too. Teachers -- who are on the front lines of the tech-infused school day -- are experts at helping families manage this stuff so that kids can learn. Here are the questions teachers wish you'd ask about the issues that affect students the most."
