The Digestive system is a long and
wonderful journey through your body. It is how your food travels and goes
throughout your body. It all begins with that bite of cheeseburger you just
took. Your teeth rip the bun and tear through the meat. Your saliva starts
coming out like crazy. Your molars begin to mash up the food and the chemicals
from saliva begin to change to food. All of a sudden the starch in your bun
turns to sugar! Your tongue does the work from there; it pushes the food to the
back of your throat, then down the esophagus to the stomach. In
your stomach it’s like your food is on some sort of amusement ride. It gets
tossed and turned, back and forth; then the food gets chemicals sprayed all
over it, which helps break it down smaller and smaller until it is just little
chunks of what use to be food. The waves of the sloppy liquid of the stomach
keep churning and then once the food gets little enough it is pushed into the
small intestine. This is where your food gets the nutrients sucked from it so
it can be used for good in your body. The food travels through the small intestine
and the liquids from your kidneys and your pancreas break it down even more.
The little finger-like bumps on the walls of the small intestine, which are
called villi, they are what take the nutrients and transport them all over your
body. After most of the nutrients are taken out then your “food” is moved to
the large intestine, this is much wider and dryer than the small intestine. The
large intestine takes the water out of your food and recycles it for your body.
At last, the end is near, after the large intestine the leftovers are now a
brown color and they sit and wait for you to expel them out your anus. And this
is the end of the magnificent journey that is called digestion.

Digesting Fats-Most dietary fats take a long time to digest,
according to "Exercise and Sport Science." However, the book notes
that medium-chain fatty acids, which are found in milk fat, coconut oil and
palm oil, are treated differently by the body. They behave more like carbohydrates,
meaning that during exercise your body quickly burns them for fuel. If you are
an endurance athlete, the book recommends including medium-chain fatty acids in
your diet because they provide energy without slowing your digestion.

 

Carbohydrates-Carbohydrates are easier to digest than
protein or fats, and are an important source of energy for exercise, notes
"Introduction to Athletic Training." Though you need carbohydrates
for fuel, that does not mean you should eat them right before exercise. The
best way to keep your energy at an optimum level is to make sure at least 60
percent of your diet is from carbohydrates if you are active and to eat complex
carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole-grain bread, sweet potatoes and
vegetables, rather than simple sugars. This ensures your muscles have
sufficient energy stores and will give you the fuel for vigorous exercise
without causing digestive problems.

Appendicitis, inflammation of the appendix, ranks at the top for
emergency abdominal surgeries, as reported by the National Institutes of
Health. The appendix attaches to the large intestine in the lower right
quadrant of the abdomen. It secretes mucus via the appendiceal lumen into the
large intestine. Mucus buildup in the appendiceal lumen allows bacteria to
multiply and cause an infection in the appendix. Symptoms of appendicitis
include sudden abdominal pain that worsens within a few hours, nausea,
abdominal swelling and vomiting. Appendicitis can affect anyone, but it most
often occurs in people between the ages of 10 and 30. The standard appendicitis
treatment is surgical removal of the appendix. Treatment requires surgical
removal of the appendix to reduce the chances the appendix will burst and spread
infection throughout the abdomen.

This Day in History

February 19th, 2004

In 2004 a dead whale washed up on a Tiawan shore. The whale
was being transported to the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan for
examination into the cause of its death. Once there, the school refused to
examine the whale and it was turned back. Before it could leave the city,
disaster struck. A buildup of gasses from decomposition in the belly of the
whale was ignited (most likely) by a bystanders cigarette. The explosion split
up the whale's stomach and covered the street, the cars on it, and even the
store fronts with whale guts. No one was seriously hurt and damage was minimal.

Right now over 35 million people in the United States alone
have some sort of digestive system problem. But there are currently three main
researches going on. They are as follows, How certain nerves control the way
the stomach and intestines work, How certain genetic differences and mutations
react to medication which works by affecting the nerves that control the
digestive system, and how ort stomachs can tell our bodies that we’re full. If
we can establish these things then we will have such a better understanding of
the digestive system and more importantly the human body. I beilve that it will
take a while for us to figure these things out, but in the end it will be worth
it. As of right now there are some approved drugs that help with overall health
in the digestive system, Alosetron and Tegaserod are the two main drugs
approved by the FDA. These are the first of their kind to actually show a major
improvement in the digestive system.

Exercise and Digestion-

Digestion is a process that takes
place best while your body is at rest. While you are exercising, blood is
diverted from your gastrointestinal tract to your muscles and lungs, impeding
digestion. This often leads to GI problems during exercise. According to
"Sports Medicine," up to 50 percent of endurance athletes suffer one
or more symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or reflux.

 

Eating Before Exercise-

Because your body cannot digest
efficiently during exercise, the University of Iowa Health Center recommends
that it is best to have nothing in the stomach or gut for two or three hours
before high-intensity exercise. This includes sugary sports drinks, though you
should continue drinking water to avoid dehydration. However, you can exercise
moderately after eating. The University of Iowa notes a slow, easy walk will
not disturb the digestive process, and if you have eaten a heavy meal it can
help you feel refreshed while burning a few calories.
