Teen charged after using teacher's admin password to access school computer | Responsible Digital Citizenship | Scoop.it
He's been charged with trespassing on his school's computer system after snooping away an administrative password and swapping a teacher's desktop wallpaper with an image of two men kissing.
EdTechSandyK's insight:

And while the child claims he didn't know it was illegal, he's been in trouble with the school for doing it before. So at the very least, he knows it is wrong.

The teacher who was using his name for a password is also somewhat to blame, in my opinion.

EdTechSandyK's insight:

We can't individually keep up with everything kids are doing. Make sure you heed the advice of those who care (like this blogger) and most importantly, KEEP CONVERSING WITH YOUR CHILDREN AND INSTILLING YOUR FAMILY'S VALUES IN THEM EVERY DAY. Remind them that what is inappropriate in person is also inappropriate online. And try not to over-react when they do mess up. Look at it as a learning/growth opportunity for both of you.

Very interesting post from a young teacher.
Great perspective and heartfelt.

What's even MORE fascinating are the comments!

Do we Trust but Verify?

Do we Block & Filter?

IS Life Filtered?

OR d o we teach ethics and keep an open line of communication with our kiddos about making the right choices both online and IRL?

IN REAL LIFE? See? Online IS real life. Even whilst gaming! I truly think that the kids most at risk for getting into trouble online are kiddos who are already "at rick" and are exhibiting troubling behavior. In which case, there are deeper issues.

"It's the choices... that we make that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities" - Professor Dumbledore

THAT is the issue, I think. Great post!

One bad tweet can be costly to a student athlete

One bad tweet can be costly to a student athlete | Responsible Digital Citizenship | Scoop.it

Three years ago, Scott Fitch couldn't believe what he was hearing. A college coach recruiting two of his Fairport High School boys basketball players called to say how much he liked what he saw after watching them play an AAU game, and that he thought both were good enough to see court time on his team as freshmen.

"But we're going to stop recruiting one of them," the college coach said.

Stunned, Fitch asked why.

"We found his Twitter account, looked through it and some of what we saw isn't representative of what our university is about," the recruiter explained.
