As the South African Department of Basic Education is introducing the concept of curriculum differentiation as an essential component of the successful delivery of the National Curriculum Statement, advice from experts such as Carol Tomlinson is very valuable.

Keyboarding

Keyboarding | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it
kathyvsr's insight:

Our 5th graders in the past had a 9 week typing class that has now switched to a year long (every other day) digital literacy program with minimal typing. We use a currently free web based program called Typing Club.  Time will tell if this method is working.

Laura Spencer's curator insight, March 11, 5:54 PM

With the Smarter Balanced test being computer-adaptive,  I have had teachers and principals ask me for keyboarding websites. Academic research I have looked at suggests that in order to teach keyboarding effectively, students need 30-40 minutes daily for four to six weeks for minimum mastery. Fifteen minutes of this time should be teacher instruction, and at least 20 minutes for practice. Research also shows that technique is more important than speed and mastery, which is why some of the free web-based programs don’t work unless a skilled teacher (and not a hunt-peck person like myself) is part of the equation.

However, for those teachers who feel confident providing the time and support for this skill, here is a website of keyboarding resources

Turn your iPad into an Interactive Whiteboard

Turn your iPad into an Interactive Whiteboard | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it

In this entry, we’ll share all the exciting possibilities for what this versatile app can do.

Whiteboard displays the high-resolution real-time video from your doc cam. But importantly, it also allows you to annotate that video. What do we mean by annotate? You can add emphasis, highlights, multiple colors, shapes, text boxes, and pointers — you know, all the interactive elements that enhance learning for your students or audience as you go along. And these are all accomplished with a simple touchscreen toolkit.

A Comprehensive Approach to RTI: Embedding Universal Design for Learning and Technology

Response to intervention (Rtl) provides tiered levels of supports to all students and allows for increasingly more inten- sive and individualized instruction. Similarly, universal design for learning (UDL) addresses needs of students by proactively plan- ning for instructional, environmental, and technology supports to allow all students to effectively access and engage in instruction. Although these two frameworks are widely accepted as structures for supporting students with diverse learning needs, the relation- ship between them has not been adequately developed. This arti- cle describes how an ecological Rtl framework that integrates scientifically based instructional strategies, proactive instruc- tional design, and purposeful technology use can provide a more seamless support system for all students.
