Tech will make us rethink age-grouping in schools

Tech will make us rethink age-grouping in schools | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it

In the past couple of years, digital education has experienced such profound growth and investment that it’s not hard to imagine that its momentum will only continue to build and re-shape schools and classrooms. But as important as building the technology to enable competency-based classrooms is building teacher support and education for new models. The technology is increasingly there, but the challenge is breaking through bureaucracy and overcoming entrenched ways of thinking about how education is structured and experienced.

Life with Raspberry Pi: Sparking a School Coding Revolution - The Digital Shift

Life with Raspberry Pi: Sparking a School Coding Revolution - The Digital Shift | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it
A $25 computer that fits in the palm of your hand, the Raspberry Pi has the potential to challenge the digital divide and make coding in schools as commonplace as textbooks. Computing could truly become about what kids can make rather than what schools can buy. Teacher Chad Sansing explains it all, with resources for digging in and getting started.

Inexpensive making in the classroom ~ ISTE

Inexpensive making in the classroom ~ ISTE | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it

by Stephanie Grimes

"It seems like everywhere you go, someone is talking about the maker movement, making or people who are makers. You may also be hearing about making in the classroom and, as a teacher, wondering how you might bring making to your school....

"Maker education programs are cropping up in schools across the nation as the maker movement gains momentum. Making relies heavily on skills such as problem solving, innovative and creative thinking, and perseverance — and it promotes positive mindsets and attitudes. What could be better for our classrooms, schools and society than confident, determined, innovative youth? Making empowers youth and amazing things can happen when we get out of their way!"

Using well-designed digital games as 'Preferred Activity Time'

Using well-designed digital games as 'Preferred Activity Time' | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it

Research is verifying what many teachers know: Well-designed digital games in the classroom increase student engagement, learning and retention. They improve students’ on-task time and even their social and emotional well-being. The benefits are especially significant when high-quality games are integrated into a curriculum over multiple lessons. So how can we put this knowledge to use as our new school year begins?

Would you agree that valuing effort is a part of growth mindset and maker education? How about failure being approached as interactive?

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, September 26, 1:16 PM

We are almost 15 years into the 21st Century and the mantra remains  cliches like "jump into the 21st Century." Perhaps, that is part of the problem. Rather than paying attention to the concrete moments we are living in we are always focused on things we cannot control such as the future.

In addition to using Lego for maths, I've taken my sons (extensive) Lego collection into History and Society & Culture to have the students (high school) demonstrate their understanding of concepts such as globalisation, communism, nationalism, capitalism. Worked really well and classes sooo happy.

Having been broken up into groups and given a concept each, They created cities or environments demonstrating the concept then talked the rest of the class through.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, September 13, 4:06 PM
