Tech will make us rethink age-grouping in schools | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it

In the past couple of years, digital education has experienced such profound growth and investment that it’s not hard to imagine that its momentum will only continue to build and re-shape schools and classrooms. But as important as building the technology to enable competency-based classrooms is building teacher support and education for new models. The technology is increasingly there, but the challenge is breaking through bureaucracy and overcoming entrenched ways of thinking about how education is structured and experienced.

The SAMR model is one tool to use. The letters stand for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification. Redefinition. This post explores how you can use the SAMR model in the classroom, with the focus on the US constitution and connect the project to Common Core. At each step of the SAMR ladder Susan Oxnevad provides "Dr. Puentedura’ Questions and Transitions for guidance." (Dr. Puentedura is the creator of the SAMR model).

The SAMR model is a great tool to use with teachers new to technology. It provides a scaffolding that will assist them as they gain new technology skills. This lesson provides a great overview and could be modified for lessons in other disciplines.

Catchbox Is A Throwable Microphone To Get The Audience Talking

Catchbox Is A Throwable Microphone To Get The Audience Talking | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it

Catchbox is a new throwable microphone designed to liven up audience participation, and in turn reduce the faffing around that seems to occur whenever a conference turns to questions from the audience.

The brightly coloured padded cube houses a wireless microphone that doesn’t mind being tossed across a room or passed from person-to-person crowd surfing-style. In fact, it’s actively encouraged. That’s because, along with being able to sustain being dropped, the device has been engineered to automatically mute the sound when flying through the air or if it falls.

I would like to highlight the following from this article:

Let’s take the focus off the tool; Instead, let’s focus on:

the pedagogy behind the tool and use it because it addresses our students’ cognitive needs, not because it is available or exciting.

developing critical thinkers with the ability to find, reflect on, curate and synthesise information.

developing lifelong learners who will be able to create and use their Personal Learning Networks to self-educate and grow.

educating digital citizens, that is, responsible members of an increasingly global and interconnected world who know their rights and responsibilities; people who can make informed decisions about the content they create or share and its impact on themselves and on the other members of a digital community.

What is Differentiated Instruction - Wiki

Via Ana Cristina Pratas

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, January 3, 10:04 AM

"Differentiated instruction implies a purposeful process for adapting the teaching and learning processes of the classroom to accommodate the needs of all learners" (Murray & Jorgenson, 2007, p. 1).

Carol Ann Tomlinson summarizes that "a differentiated classroom provides different avenues to acquiring content, to processing or making sense of ideas, and to developing products so that each student can learn effectively" (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 1).

When a teacher tries to teach something to the entire class at the same time, “chances are, one-third of the kids already know it; one-third will get it; and the remaining third won’t.  So two-thirds of the children are wasting their time.”  - Lilian Katz

Updated Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization Chart Version 3

Updated Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization Chart Version 3 | Differentiation Strategies | Scoop.it

From your feedback, we revised the chart so assessment AS, OF, and FOR learning was clarified for each of the terms.

Individualization involves assessment OF learning. This is where summative assessment is grade-based and involves testing to confirm what learners know and do not know.

Differentiation involves assessment FOR learning and OF learning. This is assessment that involves time-based testing where teachers provide feedback to advance learning.

Personalization involves assessment AS learning, FOR learning, and a minimal OF learning. This is where teachers develop capacity so learners become independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning. Assessments are based on mastery.
