Does Minecraft have a place in the computer science curriculum? by @TeacherToolkit

Does Minecraft have a place in the computer science curriculum? by @TeacherToolkit | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

"Does Minecraft have a place in the computer science curriculum?

I’m really a traditionalist at heart, but in my mind I also know where some common-sense is needed in school curriculum models. For example, if we are to teach students computer science – as recommended in the compulsory EBacc curriculum – on offer to all English students, coding is an essential part of this curriculum.

Minecraft has been used very successfully for many years across the curriculum by those teachers who are willing to engage within the curriculum from the context of the child. (Anon.)

How we teach coding is another matter? And there are many ways teachers can do this well/poorly.

“Equal treatment does not create equal opportunity.” (@doctob)

Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. This includes Minecraft if a teacher thinks it will benefit their students. Computer science helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. Speaking with experience, as a former head of ICT (until 2008) and computing teacher, I look in awe at some of the applications, schemes of work and software available to teachers, schools and students today. Software that enables our children to learn how to code and use applications and devices to access the curriculum and beyond."

iPad Game Helps Treat Lazy Eye in Kids

iPad Game Helps Treat Lazy Eye in Kids | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Kids with lazy eye — or amblyopia, the medical term for the condition — may improve their vision by playing a specially designed iPad game, a new study finds.

What's more, kids in the study who played the game experienced greater improvements in their vision after just two weeks, compared with those who received the standard treatment for lazy eye, in which the child wears a patch over his or her "good" eye.

Wearable Tech Weaves Its Way Into Learning (EdSurge News)

Wearable Tech Weaves Its Way Into Learning (EdSurge News) | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Eye-trackers that detect when your mind is wandering. Clothes that let you “feel” what it’s like to be in someone else’s body. Sensors that connect your heart rate to how engaged you are in class. These are the kinds of wearable technologies that could soon impact how we learn.

That was the takeaway from a recent gathering of researchers studying how personal data might improve learners’ self-awareness and performance. At the first ever aWEAR conference on the use of wearable technologies in education, held this week at Stanford University, experts shared how self-tracking tools like Fitbits and motion sensors might give humans insight about the way they learn.

While it’s become a habit for people to count their steps or log their hours of sleep, similar “quantified self” practices in education are in early stages of development.

Learning Should Be Fun: Gaming for Adult Learners

Learning Should Be Fun: Gaming for Adult Learners | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Twenty English language learners, gathered at an East Boston community-based organization, are playing a storytelling game on their mobile phones. After beating the game and receiving a check mark for a successful mission, the players return to a virtual world where they, as their avatars, mingle with players in Florida. They chat by typing messages and arrange to play a word-guessing game together.

This is English Innovations, a blended English language learning model combining a classroom environment with self-paced online tools. One of the tools, Xenos, uses single- and multi-player social games to help adults build English language skills. Overall, the model delivers a flexible learning environment for adult learners with jobs and families, keeping them immersed and engaged.

It’s an exciting model, but one that is all too rare.

12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology

12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
There is an assumption that persists in the educational community that more mature teachers are much more difficult and reluctant to be trained on the effective use of educational technology. To some degree, I think this assumption has been built on by the digital native vs digital immigrant myth. But as someone who has trained teachers of all ages all over the world I would say that, from my own experience, this hasn’t been the case.

Well, it's certainly better than the factories most children are forced to endure. But I still question the whole idea of seperating children from their families at a young age, and forcing them to engage in activities they probably don''t enjoy. I'm thinking the Average Mom could "school" her children and 5 or 10 of their friends and cousins over the course of the day; complete with healthy meals and snacks and PLENTY of exercise. The mass education system is not working out so well; horribly inefficient (travel to and from school alone uses a gazillion gallons of oil and wastes valuable time) and expensive (mostly due to the Textbook Mafia and top-heavy "administration"). And, well, no fun.

And while we're in reform mode, why are schools and libraries different things?

Announcing #Minecraft #Designer - Hour of Code

Announcing #Minecraft #Designer - Hour of Code  | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

"For 2016, Code.org, Microsoft and Mojang are announcing the all-new Minecraft Hour of Code Designer, a tutorial that lets students code their own Minecraft rules. This year, students can use code to control how animals and other Minecraft creatures behave—they can create a totally unique Minecraft experience, and then share it with friends or play it on their phones! The new tutorial begins in a Minecraft world where sheep don't move, the chickens don't cluck, and nothing attacks: it’s a blank slate without movement or defined action. Over the course of an hour, students will bring this world to life using computer science. At the final level, they get to define the rules of Minecraft however they wish. If they want, the cows can lay eggs, sheep can explode, and zombies can run away from players!
