4 Popular Classroom Creation Tools (And Why They Matter) - Edudemic | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Yesterday, we talked about six edtech trends in higher education that were highlighted by the NMC Horizon Report: 2014 Higher Education Edition . One of the trends identified for the second horizon (a mid-range trend, driving changes in higher education within three to five years) is a shift from students being consumers to being creators. “A  shift is taking …

What Happens When Students Use Technology Better Than Teachers?

What Happens When Students Use Technology Better Than Teachers? | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

"You know the content, you understand pedagogy, and you can navigate the minefield of diplomacy when dealing with parents, students, administrators, literacy coaches, and the local news station when they want to see the iPads glow on the students faces.

You know how to manage and coddle, inspire and organize, assess and deliver content.

But the technology is different. That part you do okay with, but, truth be told, the students are geniuses with technology. Born hackers. And of course they are, you tell yourself.

They’re digital natives."

I think, to some extent, this sometimes overstated. There are students who won''t  listen for a variety of reasons. That has always been the case. I found that most students are willing to learn. I am sitting in a university library with some digital natives. Most of them are here to learn and it shows.

"Today we are extremely pleased to announce the launch of a teacher professional development category on Coursera. We believe that helping teachers improve their skills is an important contribution that we can make to the education of students everywhere. We are truly excited about the possibilities that having these courses available for free online, to be used independently or in a blended learning capacity, will open up for teachers, schools, and districts.

"Seven leading schools of education have joined this initiative, including the College of Education, University of Washington; Curry School of Education, University of Virginia; Johns Hopkins University School of Education; Match Education’s Sposato Graduate School of Education; Peabody College of Education and Human Development, Vanderbilt University; Relay Graduate School of Education; and University of California, Irvine Extension.

"Additionally, we welcome a new network of educational institutions and museums, including the American Museum of Natural History; The Commonwealth Education Trust; Exploratorium; The Museum of Modern Art; and New Teacher Center.

"There are too many courses that I am genuinely excited about to list in this post. Here’s just a taste of them: "

What does neurology tell us about education? This post looks at 25 discoveries over the last 25 years. Some may be new to you and remember this is a field that is changing rapidly.

Below are a few of the discoveries that are covered.

* Brain plasticity - "...the brain changes constantly as a result of learning, and remains ‘plastic’ throughout life."

* "The brain’s response to reward is influenced by expectations and uncertainty."

* "Learning involves both focused attention and peripheral attention."

For more information on these discoveries and 22 additional click through to the post. You might want to check out the 3D interactive brain that explores learning strategies. It is located at http://www.opencolleges.edu.au/informed/learning-strategies/

Miloš Bajčetić's curator insight, November 26, 2013 1:57 AM

Some of them:

- Brain plasticity

- The discovery of mirror neurons

- Both nature and nurture affect the learning brain

- Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences- The brain’s response to reward is influenced by expectations and uncertainty- The brain has mechanisms for self-regulation- Education is a powerful form of cognitive enhancement- Neuroscience informs adaptive learning technology- Dyslexia and other learning disorders- Social and emotional intelligence- The brain thrives on variety- Memorization and learning are not the same thing- Metacognition enhances learning- The brain is a parallel processor.- “Cells that fire together wire together.”etc
