Did you know that everyone enjoys learning?

It’s true.

Usually the only time people don’t enjoy learning is if they are required to learn something that they don’t care about, or if they don’t enjoy the learning experience.

But overall, humans love to learn, and I mean “learning” in the rawest of forms.

Sure, there are people who enjoy formal learning (many people do in fact), but not all learning events are formal. Not everything worthwhile to know is delivered via live instructions or in an elearning course.

Think about when you purchase a new appliance or gadget. It is exciting to learn how to use it. Whether you watch a video on YouTube, read the instruction manual, or talk to a friend, the end result is the same: you seek out learning and it makes you happy.

The reason we love to learn is because that’s how we are hardwired. Our brains crave information.

In a similar way that our bodies need exercise in order to stay fit and healthy, our brains require learning to stay sharp.

While the act of learning is certainly beneficial it’s interesting to note that the type of new information we acquire has a varying impact on the brain.

Technology is critical for innovation, yet schools struggle to get students interested in this area. Could teaching robotics change this?

The Queensland government has just announced plans to make teaching robotics compulsory in its new curriculum – aimed at students from prep through to year 10.

Robotics matches the new digital technologies curriculum, strongly supported by the university sector and states, including Victoria.

But while, worldwide, there are increasing initiatives such as the Robotics Academy in the US to teach robotics in schools, Australia isn’t doing enough to get it taught in schools.

To explain why we should teach children how to program robots in schools, we first need to understand what a robot is.

The article references the Robotics Academy, a K-12 educational program from Carnegie Mellon University, but it doesn't mention CMU's CREATE Lab and tools like the Hummingbird, a robotics kit that puts the "A" in STEM.

“Apps are transformative — they have been shown to improve communication skills, the effectiveness of behavioral therapy and learning and school performance among people with autism,” said Dan Smith, Ph.D., vice president of innovative technologies for Autism Speaks, a leading autism research and advocacy organization.

“Some people with autism have a uniquely strong affinity and aptitude for technology, and they actually learn better when teachers and therapists use it, especially if those students find it challenging to engage with people,” added Smith.
