Tony Palmeri's curator insight, October 22, 2015 11:10 PM

I chose this resource because I am interested in incorporating new avenues for student presentations. PowerPoints and traditional poster projects have become more or less antiquated. In particular, I get very frustrated with presentation delivery skills (time specifications, focused on topic, etc.). Thus, I am leaning more towards videos and animations - this relieves presentation anxiety and it is easy for students to manage time requirements of a presentation. Also, I like the concept of having students build a digital portfolio.

20+ educational tools and apps that support 21st century learning

20+ educational tools and apps that support 21st century learning | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Technology has radically transformed the notion of education to the extent that a label such as 21st century learning is a commonplace in the nascent teaching literature. There are now multiple forms of learning (e.g flipped, blended, synchronous/asynchronous, mobile...etc) that are primarily shaped and mediated by some sort of technology be it web or mobile based. This is, in our eyes, not technological determinism as some prefer to call it but rather an appropriation of the emerging technologies for the service of education. Technology, as we like to think about it, is an amplifier of learning. It enhances, extends and creates learning possibilities that, just a decade ago, would have been unimaginable.

The purpose of today’s post is to share with you some of the tools and apps that best epitomize this notion of 21st century learning. This is a work in progress and we will be adding more categories and tools.

The 13 most innovative schools in the world

The 13 most innovative schools in the world | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Innovation in education can look like lots of things, like incorporating new technology or teaching methods, going on field trips, rejecting social norms, partnering with the local community. It can be a floating school in an impoverished region, like the one in Lagos, Nigeria. Or it can be a school that's blind to gender, like Egalia, in Stockholm, Sweden.

Your Mobile is your best Teacher! | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Martin is 12 years old. Like most of the children of his age, he likes playing games, reading, and goofing around whenever an opportunity to do so presents itself. Take for instance, his assignment on the American history, which is due in two days. That’s also the time when his vacation ends. Martin has already delayed completing his assignment for a long time and he’s beginning to feel the pressure now. However, he stumbles upon a free online course on the American history and downloads a live class recording. He watches the recording on his iPad as he is sitting in the back seat of the car while returning home from his favourite vacation spot. By the time he reaches home, he knows everything he should about the American history. He gets down to work promptly and completes his assignment in a short time.

Today, many learners across age groups, are familiar with the possibilities that online or mobile learning can offer to them. In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the consumption of content via smartphones. From booking flights to reading e-books, smartphones and other mobile devices, such as tablets, iPads, iPods, and more, have become a preferred means of consuming content. The use of mobile devices is a brilliant way of learning on the go.

A growing body of evidence suggests video games can affect the development of the brain.

Aimed at older players, it requires individuals to steer a car while at the same time performing other tasks.

After playing the game for 12 hours, Prof Gazzaley found pensioners had improved their performance so much they were beating 20-year-olds playing it for the first time.

They learned to play a popular karting game, clocking up about 15 hours each over five weeks. Their working memory and attention spans were tested before and after. On average, both these scores increased by about 30%.

7 Golden Rules Of Learning

7 Golden Rules Of Learning | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Many in our field work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who aren’t familiar with the body of knowledge associated with learning. Yet these same people are often responsible for providing us with course content and may be decision-makers when it comes to course design.

As our understanding of learning evolves, there are certain truisms we take for granted that a SME may not ever think about. Here is a list I created for a client to teach SMEs a few basics about instruction and learning as they design their lessons. I think these are seven golden rules that our industry can more or less agree on by now.

I chose this resource because I recently read the book "Why Students Don't Like School" by Willingham. Many of our students, and the adults who serve them, seem to accept the idea that traits such as intelligence, are a fixed entity. However, in other countries, intelligence is a quality that is approached as something that can grow and develop through effort. For the classroom practitioner, it is important to exude the idea that growth can occur if the individual attends to it. Assignments and assessments are a way to gauge comprehension to see if additional effort is needed to understand a concept. We should't just seek deficiencies, we should promote working towards proficiency when performance isn't adequate. We must foster a growth mindset.

10 effective classroom management tips for every teacher

10 effective classroom management tips for every teacher | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
What’s the key factor that separates an effective teacher from an ineffective teacher? Certainly knowledge of the course’s subject matter is important, but let’s face facts—we all know teachers who know the subject they’re teaching inside out and are ineffective, and teachers who have problems answering fact-based questions but are highly regarded.

For some classes, particularly classes with high-achieving students who are very interested in learning and have a lot of incisive questions, subject matter mastery might be the key to being an effective teacher. However, most teachers have classes that include students of various intellectual abilities, temperaments, and curiosity levels. For those teachers, classroom management skills might be the most important criteria in determining their effectiveness.

Bryan Kay's curator insight, October 22, 2015 8:43 PM

I chose this resource to use for motivation or general ideas to become a better principal and educational leader.

It is important that principals stay up to date on effective techniques used in the classroom. Observations should be made often as a leader in the building.

My goal as a future principal is to be in classrooms as much as possible in order to provide feedback to teachers. Ultimately this will lead to improved teacher effectiveness.

Tony Palmeri's curator insight, October 24, 2015 9:57 PM

I scooped this article because I am always seeking ways to improve classroom management. However, I dispute the thought of "applying the rules consistently". Much like we differentiate instruction, certain students must be managed in different ways. Not to mention we must be legally compliant with 504's which might specify that a student cannot be removed from class unless certain conditions are met. Yes, encouraging questions and allowing students opportunities to teach and answer questions ere solid suggestions. Letting students "make assignments" is a little fuzzy in my mind. Perhaps it is something that I should revisit.
